Grade 10 Career Exploration Week Reflections

The Grade 10 students had a Career Exploration Week from March 14-18, the week before the Spring Break. I would like to share some of their reflections and experiences with you:

“I realised how much energy it takes to play with children, and start up conversations with them to see if they’re learning anything. I really enjoyed my time with the Pre-Schoolers. I would definitely consider this as a backup career.”

“I wrote and published an article on day two that I was very proud of. I learned a lot on this day as I worked closely with some of the best writers at Fox Studios to create my article. They said that they were very impressed with my writing and couldn’t believe I hadn’t taken a writing course before.

“What I learnt today is that you need to be patient with younger kids and you also need to be mindful because some kids are quiet and shy and might have some problem of their own.”

“I enjoyed my work at Rip Curl and I realized that graphic design (here are the products I made: Hand Band, Diah’s video, GromSearch Vid, Model) although is a fun line of work to be in, I would still like to work in game design instead.”

“I talked with the GM and he had told me that he has seen some of the work that I had done and thought that I’ve been doing a brilliant job which made me feel really good about myself.”

“Some tips and advice that I got for choosing a career was that rather than being specifically really good at something, it is more like having a good attitude towards the job and liking the job and respecting your staff members.”

“Today I watched a few auditions for a movie. It was a high school movie so it was interesting for me to see the different scenes and I saw several actors try out for one character and they all interpreted the character differently. That made me realize how important casting is because it can really change the whole movie depending on which actor they cast.”

“Today I got more involved because after watching yesterday’s training I found out I already knew everything they had taught in the First Aid training because of health lessons with Mr. Sutherland. So today I helped explain a presentation and then helped with CPR lessons and also other first aid courses.”

“I did E-commerce which basically means advertising via the internet, such as through several social media. I also did some replying to reviews in TripAdvisor which was a huge deal in the Bali Zoo marketing. I definitely see myself in my future doing this job and several other jobs because I want to create a company myself.”

“I was excited to start writing the actual interview. I love this job and I really want to be a journalist. “

“Overall Career Week was a good week for me. It taught me new things such as what working feels like and how hard it is to earn money in this world and it made me much more open minded than before.”

“I learned that NGO work is really something that I am passionate about. The difference is that this time, I was the one working instead of just following my parents around. I was the one working with Sara and the Wonogiri farmers: asking questions, writing the article, translating. I loved working with new people and learning new things and helping other people out.”

“What I did at the hotel for career week was definitely a big experience and step in discovering myself and finding out whether or not the hospitality management side was the right career for me.”

“I learned that educational psychologist and teacher are definitely not a job for me, because of the fact that I have to be friendly and make someone comfortable.”

I was really engaged the whole time I was in the kitchen and I would really consider working as a chef in a 5 star hotel when I’m older because I have always had a big passion for cooking and creating.”

“Looking back at my goals, I developed a lot of new skills such as being punctual, polite, patient, happy & friendly, following instructions, good team worker/co-operative. For me, I was good at multitasking, understanding and dealing with high-pressure situations, also time management.

“I created the [Rip Curl] timeline successfully and to create this I had to go to each and every person in the office that was involved with the event so I could organise what they would be contributing to the event, when and how.”

“This part of career week gave me a true experience of running a business and launching a product, the task gave me more of an idea of finance and accounting which are things I’d have to consider in the line of duty of product development.”
