Kartini Day During Indonesian Classes

Hari Kartini by Grade 3

On the 21st of April, Kartini Day (Hari Kartini) was celebrated in Indonesia. It is a special day, dedicated to Raden Ajeng Kartini, one of the prominent Indonesian heroines and pioneers in women’s emancipation. In our school, we celebrated Kartini Day by wearing Kebaya or Batik. The BIS Community looked amazing!

One of the Grade 3 Indonesian units of inquiry is Celebrations. We explored the central idea, People recognize important events through celebrations. We discussed some national and international religious celebrations, and shared our favorite activities for this special day.

During Indonesian classes, the students were given some information about R.A Kartini. Each student was given an opportunity to demonstrate their reading skills based on the information given. This understanding was used to create a poster of Kartini. The students also enjoyed singing the “Kartini” song in class. These activities have given our children an ideal opportunity to show their creativity and appreciation towards the local culture.
