Primary – Second Grade Composting

The 3 R’s of Composting

On Wednesday 3rd of May, Grade 2 went on a fieldtrip to Temesi Recycling Centre in Gianyar.

We saw just how much rubbish our community produces. Mountains of waste each day! At Temesi, we learned that they process 50 tons of this rubbish every day to REDUCE the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfills and other areas of the environment. They do this through recycling and composting.

From our visit to the Temesi  Recycling Center, Grade 2 found out how to make compost. We start by separating rubbish into organic and inorganic waste.

Back at school, we took action to start our own compost bin to RECYCLE organic waste we make from snack and lunch. It is located outside the Grade 2 classroom. This is our trial composting project. Our goal is to teach others about compost and expand our project to all classes and the staff room in BIS, producing valuable compost to REUSE in our Community Garden.

For the trial, we are collecting food scraps from our class, Grade 5 and Kindergarten. Preschool donated some brown organic litter and we added dry leaves from the garden. Each day, we stir the compost and keep it sealed to protect the process from curious neighbourhood animals.

It is so easy, we wanted to share the process with you so, you can compost too!
