A Message from the Board

Dear BIS Community,

We are well into our first term of this new school year and time for an update on a few key activities of the Board.

But first, for those who are unfamiliar with the Board’s structure and its function, aside from referring you to the BIS website, the following is a brief description of the Board’s structure.

Bali Island School exists under an Indonesian registered foundation, “Yayasan Bali International School” or YBIS.  The foundation has been able to retain the “International” in its name. As per foundation laws, we have three tiers:

–        Governing Advisory Board (GAB) – the ultimate authorities for the foundation and the organ that bears all ultimate legal and fiduciary accountability.

–        Board of Directors (BoD) – the “action” division of the foundation charged with the planning and functioning of the Board. The BoD works closely with the Head of School to ensure the school has the necessary support and tools to ensure our students receive educational excellence. The BoD receives direction from and reports to the GAB.

–        Supervisory Board (SB) – monitors the work of the BoD including the HoS and reports directly to the Governing Advisory Board.

There has been no change in membership of any levels of the Board from last school year. The BoD currently consists of:

Kib Roby                                 Chairman

Regine Winkler                      Secretary

Charlie Steinhauser              Treasurer

Su Kim                                    Member

Allen Doumit                          Member

Perhaps the most visible and tangible activity in the school that is happening is the construction and renovation process. Ms. Walsh has been keeping you up to date on the progress of the library and the courtyard and we are all looking forward to being able to use these spaces soon.

As many of you are aware, the Board is currently in the process of seeking a Head of School to succeed Ms. Walsh starting in the 2018-2019 school year. We have hired Search Associates, a professional search company who focuses on the academic industry, to assist us in this crucial process.  At the time of closing the application window, they had received just over seventy applications from candidates spread throughout the world. To see this level of interest in our school is very encouraging.

Over the last several weeks, the search committee has short-listed candidates who show the best fit for our unique school and who’s educational philosophy aligns with our own. From those short-listed, we have chosen the two candidates who show the most potential and have arranged a campus visit next week.

Our first candidate, Mr. Garth Wyncoll will be flying in from Quito, Ecuador where he is current the high school principal of Academia Cotopaxi. He will be on campus on Monday and Tuesday. Our second candidate, Mr. David Botbyl will be spending time with us on Thursday and will be on campus on Friday. He is currently the Superintendent of the American International School of Kuwait. If you happen to run into them, please introduce yourself and give them a warm welcome.

We are hoping to have a finalist by mid-October, knowing full well that this is not only an incredibly important decision that the Board must make, but an equally important decision for the candidate who must make a life-changing transition.

To fulfil the Board’s commitment to living our core values, we seek annual training or development through workshops, conferences or seminars. A couple Board members have just completed a workshop designed and conducted by the International Baccalaureate (IB) specifically for school owners and governing boards. We plan to use the new knowledge in implementing more efficient and comprehensive methods that will help us more effectively govern the school and realize our long-term vision. This year, members of the Board will also attend the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) Leadership Conference in Bangkok for further education and connecting with like-minded individuals from other schools/boards.

We appreciate the support that you all provide to the school. Your combined efforts are the main ingredient in the unique culture we have in our school that supports the environment for our children to learn.

Kib Roby

Chairman
