Approaches to Learning – Self Management Skills in Primary Assembly

The students are using the Primary School Assemblies to start exploring or revisit the IB Approaches to Learning (ATLs). ATLs are deliberate strategies, skills and attitudes that permeate the IB teaching and learning environment. ATL supports the IB belief that a large influence on a student’s education is not only what you learn but also how you learn.

The IB approaches to learning skills are

  1. Thinking skills
  2. Communications skills
  3. Social skills
  4. Self-management skills
  5. Research skills

We focused on Self Management Skills during our first Primary Assembly of the year. Students worked in multi age groups to identify specific sub skills that they use every day at school and at home before sharing their thinking with the whole Primary School.

Grade 3 Loves Expressing Themselves…

Students in Grade 3 are focusing on the central idea “through the arts, people use different forms of expression to convey their uniqueness as human beings”. One of our tuning in activities was to listen to a piece of music (someone else conveying their uniqueness) and sharing their interpretation about what the piece represents through watercolours. Here is a collection of artwork and different interpretations of the song, ‘Morning Mood’ by Edvard Grieg. What picture does the music paint for you?

Approaches to Learning – Social Skills in Grade 5

As part of our Approaches to Learning, Grade 5 are focusing on social skills. Under the Primary Years Programme (PYP) there are six key areas of focus under social skills; accepting responsibility, respecting others, cooperating, resolving conflict, group decision making and adopting to a variety of group roles.

To support Grade 5 in developing their social skills, we have been focusing on group tasks to build relationships and strengthen collaboration. Here are some of the games and activities we have worked on.

Group games during Indonesian Independence day celebrations to help us respect others
Cup stacking team challenge that needs cooperation from every team member for success
Working in groups to build spaghetti towers that required group decision making.

Recycling Station

As you may or may not know, Bali Island School has a Recycling Station at the back of the MPR near the Kindy, Grade 2, Grade 4 and MS Music classrooms. This morning, Ibu Deni and I met with Ibu Bintang from Eco Bali (http://eco-bali.com ) to get us organised for the upcoming year.

All members of the school community are invited to bring the following things to the bins, which will be emptied every Friday morning:

  • TetraPak
  • white paper
  • plastic bottles
  • aluminium cans
  • other metal tins
  • cardboard carton and boxes

We will no longer be collecting glass bottles or other recyclables.

Introduction to the PYP at Bali Island School

It was great to have a small group attend the parent information session introducing the Primary Years Programme at Bali Island School. We discussed what we considered was important for our students to take away form their education at Bali IS, we reviewed the IB & Bali IS Mission Statements before diving into the 5 Essential Elements of the Primary Years Programme.  We started discussing assessment and how the programme has a transdisciplinary approach. Dates will be confirmed in the coming weeks for future workshops that will focus on inquiry learning and assessment. Click below  to access the presentation that was shared.
