Three Way Conferences

All of our Primary students from PS3&4 through to Grade 5 will participate in Three Way Conferences next Thursday 4 October. This will be a regular school day for the primary students with our Indonesian Teaching Partners (ITPs) leading lessons when the homeroom teachers are involved with the Three Way Conferences. The purpose of this day in the primary school is to recognise & celebrate the achievements of our students and to identify and communicate areas that may need improvement. It is also an opportunity to articulate future learning goals. We hope you enjoy your meetings and ask that you are considerate about attending and ending your conferences punctually.

Grade 4 & 5 End of Unit Celebrations

Over the last couple of weeks we have had parents join our Grade 4 class as they shared their personal Inquiries into body systems and Grade 5 as they shared their personal inquiries into governments and human rights. It has been great to see how the students’ skills, knowledge and understandings have developed during their units of inquiry and how confidently they could share their inquiries with their parents.

Primary Language A Indonesian

Grade 5 has just finished their first unit of study under the theme “How We Organise Ourselves” with the conceptual understanding “Responsible citizens are knowledgeable about societal systems
locally and globally.”

In Language A Indonesian, we looked into the role of banjar in Balinese community and learned how to be responsible citizens. To learn more about banjar, we conducted an interview with a member of
Banjar Taman, Ibu Dian. We improved our communication skills and developed our report writing skills as we put together all the information that we have learned throughout the unit.

Here is some of the inquiries that came out of this learning experience.

Darendra: Berapa keluarga dalam satu banjar?
Zaria        : Apa tanggung jawab anggota banjar?

Primary Indonesian B – Let’s introduce ourselves

Grade 1 has started to learn Indonesian. Our first unit of inquiry was focusing on the central idea “Families define and shape who we are as individuals”. We learned how to introduce ourselves as well as our family. We developed our language skills through the activity we did in class. We were risk – takers and showed our confidence when using Indonesian to communicate.

PYP Attitudes

At last week’s Primary Assembly, all of our Kindergarten to Grade 5 students worked together with  their classmates to create ‘PYP Attitude Trees’.  Have a chat to your children about the PYP Attitudes and see what ideas they are developing.

While we recognise the importance of knowledge, concepts and skills, these alone do not make an internationally minded person. It is vital that there is also focus on the development of personal attitudes towards people, towards the environment and towards learning, attitudes that contribute to the well-being of the individual and of the group.  (source. Term 2 After School Activities

Most of our Term 1 After School Activities will finished last week (with the exception of paid music lessons and BSSA soccer)  and the teachers are already planing a wide range of interesting activities for Term 2. We have received some feedback from parents about suggested new activities and have also asked the students the type of activities they would like. Keep an eye out later this week for the Term 2 After School Activities information.

PYP Action

Please remember to share any Action that your children undertake at home by contacting your child’s teacher, emailing primaryprincipal@baliis.et or sharing on Twitter with the hashtag #BaliISPYPAction Remember that Action can be as simple as your child has been practising their Bahasa Indonesian when out with the family, perhaps your child has done some reading or inquiry on YouTube about something they are learning at school. For more information about student Action, click here to read the last Primary News.

Adventure Bag Action

A great example of Action being taken by travellers and explorers can be found here. Travel blogger, Jackson has started Adventure Bag. Every time he goes on an adventure he collects one adventure bag full of trash. It’s his small way of saying thanks to mother nature for allowing him to enjoy her beautiful creations. This is an example of one small action that each of us can undertake when we’re enjoying the outdoors in Bali. Mums and dads may want to take a photo of the collected adventure bags and post them on Instagram with the hashtag  #adventurebag and tag @adventurebagcrew – don’t forget to tag #BaliISPYPAction

Calligraphy Demonstration

Parents, students and staff are invited to a Calligraphy Interactive Demonstration which will be run by Betty of ‘Letter by Betty’ in the Library from 2:15 – 3:45pm on Wednesday 17 October. Those attending will be able to try calligraphy using the equipment supplied by Better and ask her questions about this beautiful art form. People interested in doing further work with Betty will be able to register for workshops which will be held at The Bali Florist the following week.
