Promoting academic achievement in Secondary
One of our goals this year in the secondary school is to promote academic achievement, so that every student reaches their full potential.
We have various initiatives to support students:
- After school Maths help, three times a week, with different Maths teachers each day. Students can choose to try a different teacher from their timetabled one if they wish. This is open to any student. This semester the days are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Next semester the days will be Monday, Thursday and Friday
- Maths for competitions is a student-led activity on Tuesdays
- Extension Maths for selected grade 8 students is held within the timetable on Fridays
- Approaches to Learning Club is an activity held on Thursdays. Students can choose to attend, or some are advised by their homeroom teachers that they should sign up in order to work on their ATL skills such as organisation, avoiding distractions etc.
- Our English as an Additional Language specialist works with some students who need extra help, both in and out of class. These students are identified by teachers
- Creative Writing Club is held on Mondays; some of our students are writing novels, encouraged by their peers. Sign up for this activity
- SATS & ACT– we are a testing centre for these tests. Please see the Counsellor, Ms Holley, for details
- University Fairs: so far this year we have hosted two fairs for visiting universities. These are not only useful for grade 11 and 12 students to speak to potential universities, but also to inspire younger students for their futures, and the possibilities open to them if they do well in school. Open to all
- Next semester we will start an after-school Learning Lab for students who are having difficulties focusing in class or completing homework. More details on this later.
