Welcome back!
Welcome back to school, and a happy 2016 to everyone!
I hope that this is a better year for the world, although with recent events around the globe the year has not started well for many people. This emphasises the need for us all to be careful about security, both in and out of school. BIS is a safe place for students, both physically and emotionally, and I appreciate what our security team, and also teachers and the counselor, do to make students feel accepted, appreciated and included.
World events also highlight the importance of the IB Learner Profile, and the need for us to educate our children, who will be the leaders of the future, to be principled, thoughtful, knowledgeable and caring people who are aware of their place and responsibilities as global citizens. This is not just a dream; it can be a reality, and starts small:
‘It’s not what you do once in a while, it’s what you do day in and day out that makes the difference.’ (Craig; http://www.positivelypositive.com/)
We have lots of students working on initiatives to make the community a better and more sustainable place. This semester a grade 11 student, Sierra Anderson, as part of her DP CAS, has organized the secondary school to adopt re-useable plastic food boxes for lunches, which brings us in line with the Primary School. So far it is working very well, and if you can imagine what nearly 300 cardboard boxes every day contributed to the waste disposal problem in Bali, it is a considerable impact!
A reminder that if you have queries, compliments or other things to say please make an appointment to see the person most directly concerned, and if the issue remains I am happy to talk with you.
We look forward to a positive and productive semester ahead, with lots to look forward to.
Helen
