Primary – Reading During Vacation
Read! Read! Read!
During our long winter holiday, remember that reading is a fantastic way to spend time together as a family. Whether you read to your child, or support them in finding “Just Right” texts to read on their own, make reading a part of your holiday plans. Here are some ways to make it fun:
Explore the bookstores in your hometown or in the city you are visiting. Children love to poke around bookstores and find new treasures.
- Use an e-reader to make reading accessible on long flights, car rides or train trips. Your e-reader is lightweight and fits into any bag.
- Pledge to finish a series. Begin a new series and see if you can finish it together. See this link for ideas on series kids love. You can either read these books to your child or help them select the appropriate series to start.
- Read EVERYTHING around you. When you visit a new place, or a place you have not seen for quite some time, engage with your child to read all of the environmental print. Read the road signs, restaurant signs and store signs. With older children, ask for their help in reading maps, train schedules and menus.
Why Read Aloud to your Child?
Reading aloud to your child provides them with access to books that they may not yet be able to read on their own. It encourages imagination and allows children to develop a strong sense of story and text structure. These skills can then be transferred into their writing. Reading aloud to your child lengthens his/her attention span and increases vocabulary development. Not to mention, it is relaxing and fun.
