BIS Participates in Middle School GIN Conference, Hong Kong 2017
This year’s Middle School Global Issues Network Conference focused on taking action and inspiring middle school students from across the EARCOS region to Get INvolved!
The conference centers around issues of both social and environmental sustainability, and encourages students to become more globally conscious. Hosted by Hong Kong Academy GIN Team, during 4th-5th March, students participated in a variety of hands-on experiences and formed lasting connections with like-minded students.
The first day of the conference included presentations from inspiring keynote speakers, discussing many crucial global issues, such as human trafficking, animal welfare, access to quality education and earth stewardship. Moreover, students also got the opportunity to have off campus excursions to UNESCO Geopark, WWF Hoi Ha Wan and e-Farm while teachers attended a workshop on “Systems Thinking for Addressing Global Issues”.
On the second day, Ralisha Woodhouse a Grade 7 BIS student made our school proud by presenting her Service as Action project on the decline and importance of the preservation of bees in Bali. Her workshop raised awareness of a relatively unknown topic amongst the students and she formed networks with schools from China, Thailand, Surabaya, Taiwan, and Kazakhstan.
Another highlight of the event was the BIS booth “Save the Bees Bali” at the Service as Action Fair, where Ralisha and Ibu Sri (Secondary Indonesian teacher) successfully campaigned for awareness and raised funds from selling made-in-Bali beeswax candles. Many students and educators from other schools visited the booth, asked questions, donated money for the pins, and bought the candles!
They were sold out!
It was a meaningful experience that had a strong impact on all participants. BIS continues to support opportunities for MYP students to be engaged in global issues.
