Counselor’s Corner – August 16, 2019
Dear BIS Families, Welcome to the new school year! On Monday, August 19th from 8-9AM we will host our first Parent Session on “Campus Security and Child Protection”, lead by Mr. Hamish Sutherland, Head of Campus Security and Child Protection Officer and Rachael Gerbic, the K12 Counselor. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about the important work we are ALL engaged in here-keeping kids safe so they can focus on learning! We will discuss our Child Protection Policy and the efforts we are making to educate students on protecting themselves and who to turn to if they need help.
Here are just a few of these efforts:
- Counselor visits during Term 1 to all Primary classrooms to talk about safe and unsafe touch and safe people to talk to.
- Child Protection Posters in every classroom and office throughout school with instructions on what to do and who to tell if there are concerns about a child being harmed. The posters include photos of each of the five members of our Child Protection Team.
- Discussions in Secondary Health classes and Homerooms throughout Term 1 on Child Protection and reporting peer on peer abuse.
- Trained Peer Mediators in the secondary school to support students in finding peaceful solutions to their conflicts.
- Mindfulness classes with the Counselor in Primary and Secondary to help kids self regulate and make safe choices.
College Counseling (for Secondary Parents)
All students in grades 9-12 will be using Bridge-U this year, with a regular college counseling class scheduled for each grade each term.
Students will discover interests and strengths, find programs and college majors that match these strengths, set goals, begin their essays, and ultimately apply to universities with all their supporting documents loaded on Bridge-U.
We look forward to a robust college visit schedule again this year and they’ve already started! During the first week of school our grade 9 and 10 students were treated to a college session on universities in the UK led by Queen’s University in Belfast. Please continue to check the university visits schedule to see who’s visiting. This schedule is updated regularly.
