Extended Essay
The grade 12 students are in their final stage of their EE journey. The first submission took place on September 9 and all students are working now on improving their work, based on the feedback they received from their supervisors. The final submission will happen on October 28 so it will be important to use the next couple of weeks efficiently to make changes that improve the 4000 work essay. For Business Management, Nathan Moies-Delvall decided to investigate the partnership between PSG and Jordan and evaluate how it benefited the French Football Club. For Economics, Adi is looking at the impact the on-demand driver industry has had so far on the Indonesian economy as it is commonly assumed that gojek and grab make our lives much easier but there is very little research on the negative effects / externalities caused by those tertiary sector businesses.

Economics – Class of 2023
The grade 11 Economics class had a strong start to the academic year. Students already learned about Demand and Supply, the Market Equilibrium and Elasticities and as part of our preparation for the first Internal Assessment (IA), presented news about current global events that relate to Microeconomics. Daniel decided to use an article about the supply problems due to driver shortages that IKEA is facing in the UK. Applying subject knowledge to Real-World Examples (RWE) is a big part of the Economics syllabus as it allows the students to see how theories and concepts are connected to everyday life.

TOK-tober
Today is the first day of October and that means, time for TOK-tober!

During the month of October there will be special attention in secondary, mostly focussing on grade 9 up till grade 12 where students have fun and inspiring activities to challenge their (and our) thinking. All full IB DP students in grade 11 and 12 follow the CORE subject ‘Theory of Knowledge’ where they explore the nature and methodology of what we claim to know. That said, it’s a different way of looking at the world around us that should not be limited to the classroom only and can be challenging and exciting for everyone!

This first week of TOK-tober students will be challenged by a drawing Competition that will run till the end of the month. We are hoping to receive many artworks related to one of the following questions;

  • Why should we care about acquiring knowledge?
  • What impacts the way we think the most?
  • Has technology helped us to develop knowledge or just given us more reason to doubt it?

Stay tuned as more TOK-tober activities are coming up…..

Grade 9 Individuals and Societies
Grade 9 students are currently working on an Interdisciplinary unit with the topic ‘Industrial Revolution in Great Britain and how this influenced our world today’. Students work on this unit in combination with the English Department. Through a variety of tasks, students develop their research skills, learn how to find information, decide on what information would be useful and reliable for their research as well as analyzing a wide variety of sources. Students develop their communication skills by creating slideshows, posters, and videos. As a final tasks students will write a newspaper front page. This past week students have explored in groups Child Labour issues today; realizing that some things have not changed that much from 100 years ago…

Grade 10 Individuals and Societies
Grade 10 is all focused on World War One and as students just finished their timelines related to the outbreak of the war, they are now proceeding with their independent research on the effects of the war at the homefront and how it was to live in the trenches. This task is a preparation for their Extended Essay next year and Internal Assessments. This task will be completed in combination with English as students are reading the book ‘All quiet on the western Front’ by E. Remarque.
