Grade 3 Indonesian Studies
“We share 97% of our DNA with Orangutans.”
“Some of our daily products use palm oil which takes Orangutans’ habitat away.”
“We can do something to help Orangutans.”
Those are some highlights of discussions that Grade 3 students participated in Indonesian Studies class. Students researched more about Orangutans by using the school’s library and safe search engines and found that many primates are endangered. Their habitats and families are taken away because of deforestation. Students found that there is a connection between people’s lifestyles and Orangutans’ habitats.
Going further, Grade 3 students decided that they can do something to help Orangutans. Being thinkers and caring, they are preparing a poster to raise people’s awareness about Orangutans’ conditions and to promote things that we can do to help.
Here are some of their thoughts about a good poster in the planning stage :
The posters have not been made, but we will make sure that their messages will be spread out once they are ready. Taking action? Aye aye, Captain! (Ibu Ina, Indonesian Studies)
Grade 3 & Grade 5 Civics
Grade 3 learns about the diversity of tribes in Indonesia. Students identify the tribes who live on some islands in Indonesia such as Minangkabau, Dayak, Badui, Jawa, Bali, and Asmast. They also learn about the traditional houses and traditional clothes of several tribes in Indonesia.
There are several activities that students do while learning about the diversity of tribes in Indonesia such as matching the words with the tribe’s picture, watching videos about tribes in Indonesia, and matching the tribe’s pictures with their traditional houses. Students are very excited to learn about tribes in Indonesia.
This term in Civics class grade 5 is learning about the diversity of cultures in Indonesia. They use their research skills to research some cultural aspects in Indonesia that interest them. Data about cultures are entered into google docs and presented by students. Some of the cultural aspects they discuss are: Ritual Tiwah, Hari Raya Galungan, Hari Raya Kuningan, etc.
