Secondary eNews – Sept 15th, 2022

World Literacy Day Reminder
Next Wednesday, September 21st will be BIS’s school-wide celebration of World Literacy Day. For Secondary, that day will include:

  • Whole school silent read on the big field across from the Covered Court from 8:00 – 8:40. Please ensure you have something to read BEFORE the 21st.
  • Indonesian author Debby Lukido will be giving a presentation/talk during periods 2 and 3 in the Downstairs Secondary Library area about her career as an author, tips, and advice, and she will answer student questions. Certain grades will be attending with their class during those periods.
  • A “Write a Story in Less than 10 Words” white poster will be outside the Counselor’s office throughout the day. Please contribute your original creative attempts at this writing exercise. Previous examples are posted in the library.
  • A handful of Secondary Students will be reading stories to Primary classes.

Please see Mr. Marshall (nmarshall@baliis.net or stop by the library) before the 21st for any questions.

Banned Books Week in the Library

Libraries across the world celebrated “Banned Books Week” this past week, a promotion and celebration of reading books that have been banned at some point in history, somewhere in the world. The library has many of these banned books, which range from popular picture books to “coming of age” books to books that some people have judged to “pose a threat” to certain “traditional values”. While some of the selections could be considered

reasonable (though, still, at the end of the day, a banned book is the success of censorship), others are truly perplexing choices (as well as funny). The “Where’s Waldo” picture book series, well-known kid’s classics like  “Goodnight Moon” and “Where The Wild Things Are” and societal staples like “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Giver” are on the list, as are modern critiques of race and class, which challenge antiquated narratives of history and what is acceptable like “Stamped From The Beginning” or “Nickel and Dimed”.  Stop by the library to read something that someone, somewhere, didn’t want you to read! We will keep Banned Books Week going all month….
