Week 14-The Importance of Feedback
The past three days BIS Teachers have been working together around the delivery of their instructional material and how to best impact our student’s learning. One of the major components of the learning process that was highlighted was the importance of feedback. All learners want to know how they have done and how they can improve. Please take a look at the clip below to find out some more about the power of feedback.

Fine Arts Exhibition
On November 16, the Arts Department will be hosting a sharing of work exhibition across the MYP years and grade 11 Theatre studies. Visual Arts students will have their work displayed around the walls of the MPR and musical and theatrical performances will also take place. All students in grades 6 – 10 are required to attend and stay until the end of all performances, even if their roles have already been played. Parents are invited and encouraged to come and enjoy what is building up to be an enjoyable afternoon of showcasing the Arts at BIS. The doors will open at 4pm at which time students and parents can view the artworks and the music and drama performances will commence at 4.30pm. We estimate that the finish time will be approximately 6pm.
On behalf of the Arts team, we look forward to seeing you there.
Parent Information Session
Please join us for a Parent Information Session on “How to Talk to Kids and Teens” by our School Counselor, Karin Holley. We will go over some common mistakes that parents make, discuss tips and share ideas. It will be held on Monday November 13th from 8:00-8:50 in Room 10.
BSSA Volleyball
This Wednesday we will resume our BSSA Volleyball competition. Our teams have been taking their limited time to practice, teams have met at lunch, after school at the start of their holiday and during breaks. I know that they are excited to have some competition! Below are where the different age groups are going:
- 9-10 mixed are all at BIS
- 11-12 girls and boys are all at Dyatmika (buses are booked)
- 13-15 girls and boys are all at BIS
Bali Math Competition
This coming weekend BIS will host a Maths competition, where students use their math abilities to problem solve and compete in mathematical computations. This weekend is the culmination of a great deal of hard work by some of our math students here at BIS. This competition is also in preparation for the South East Asian Math Competition or SEAMC. I look forward to watching them take on some real life challenging problems and I am thankful that I am not competing against them! Go Dragons!
Growth and Learning
This is a topic that I speak about quite a bit here and to our staff and students. It is what we believe here at BIS and it is the foundation of the way in which we teach-constantly putting our students in positions to grow. Recent brain research shows the importance of this idea of growth and the fact that the more we take on the more connections our brain is able to generate-and this is where learning occurs, through these connections. Our teachers are constantly asking our students to do different tasks and work through different challenges to help these changes occur. Please ask your student about some of the small, low stake challenges that their teachers are presenting them with. I would like to include a TedTalk clip that highlights the value of these challenges on learning and the development of the brain. I hope you find it as interesting as we do.
