Career Day January 26, 2018 – Looking for volunteers!

BIS is organizing a Career Day for Grades 9-12 students. Our aim is to provide a platform whereby students can begin discovering their potential career paths. This will assist them in making better informed course choices and will help them to identify possible college/university majors. The program will provide an opportunity for community/parent volunteers to meet the students and share their various career experiences and paths. We hope that you will consider volunteering to represent your industry, career field, and/or words of wisdom! The following are the details of the Career Day and our expectations for volunteers.

Date: Friday January 26, 2018

Time: 8:00-9:40 AM

Venue: Secondary classrooms

Topics that could be covered in the presentation:

  1. Subjects or courses relevant to your field
  2. Character traits that are helpful in your job
  3. A typical work day and lifestyle
  4. Career path, salary guide and advancement possibilities
  5. Rewarding and challenging aspects of your career(s)
  6. What you studied in college
  7. If you changed careers
  8. Advice about finding the right career path

Suggestions for Presenters – but not mandatory:

Students prefer an interactive session to just a presentation. If you can come up with a short activity, game, a discussion, or a case study from the field, they will really enjoy that. Provide visuals such as photos, video, pamphlets, etc. Projectors and sound systems are available in all classrooms.

Format

Presenters will each receive their own room. There will be three rounds of 30 minutes each, with 5 minute breaks in between. In other words, volunteers will be presenting the same talk between 1 and 3 times depending on how many students are interested. We have chosen this format in order to provide intimate settings and smaller groups while still exposing students to a variety of careers. Presenters are free to decide how they want to present. We suggest you leave time for questions and open discussion.

If you are willing to participate as a volunteer, please email Karin Holley (counselor@baliis.net) and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Kind regards,
