Integrating Indonesian into Transdisciplinary Units of Inquiry

In collaboration with the Grade 4 How We Organize Ourselves Unit,

students in Language A Indonesian lessons inquired into the role of

supply and demand and the distribution of goods and services.

In order to uncover their prior knowledge, students brainstormed ideas

about what they thought they knew and any related wonderings. These

thoughts were developed into questions and were later used to

interview two shops near the school. Students displayed the attribute of

thinkers as they generated quality questions for their investigation.

They used the visible thinking routines “Connect/Extend/Challenge”

and “The 4Cs” to synthesize and discuss the information from the two

interviews.

They developed their conceptual understanding of connection between

supply and demand and the function of distribution systems. They

compared the two shops and developed general conclusions. Through

reflective discussions, students improved their thinking and

communication skills. They learned how to develop questions,

compare, connect and make generalizations.

Here is some of the thinking that came out of this learning experience.

William: Bagaimana toko ibu mempromosikan barang-barangnya?

James: Apakah orang kasih discount kalau warungnya berhasil? Kedua
