Primary – Scientific Inquiry in Kindergarten
Kindergarten’s current unit of study is under the theme “How the World Works.” We are studying how our daily lives are connected to the Earth’s natural cycles. We are
learning about the properties of light, types of weather, seasons, phases of the moon, and tides.
To beg
in the unit, we watched a time-lapse video of the sun and completed a thinking routine called See-Think-Wonder. We had many questions about the sun! To learn more, we conducted several experiments to help us understand more about how light works. We even made a rainbow in the classroom! We are also reading books to learn more about the sun and why it is important to us. We were amazed to discover that the reason we have day and night is because of the Earth’s spin on
its axis!
In the next few weeks, we will continue to conduct experiments, read books, and watch videos to learn about the Earth’s natural cycles and why they occur. We will draw diagrams and write informational text to record our new learning.
Then we will use our new learning to make connections to our own lives: How do these cycles affect us? How does it change what we see, do, feel, wear, and eat? We will use our art and communication skills to share these connections with others.
