PYP Parent Session : Approaches to Learning

Thank you so much to those attending our parent’s session on Approaches to Learning in the downstairs library this Monday. It was beautiful to take the time to share ideas, reflect on our own skill set and practically apply our learning. Please find attached the slides for this presentation, and if you haven’t had the opportunity to fill in this survey to request parent sessions, please let me know.

Please feel free to email me at pypcoordinator@baliis.net  or pop in to chat about learning at BIS.

We started off by doing a chalk talk to identify what did we already know about the approaches to learning and what were our personal connections to them.

After this, we discussed the five categories of ATL and the subskills they are broken down into. After taking some time to tune in to this information, it was time to apply our understanding.

Parents were challenged to apply their skill set by building a cup tower in small groups. This allowed for a challenge and opportunity to build

  • Research skills
  • Social skills
  • Communication skills
  • Self-management skills
  • Thinking skills

After this activity, parents reflected on the skills that they used during this challenge.

Parents used a visible thinking routine called I used to think… But now I think….  to reflect on their new learning after the session.

BIS Book Week

Call for Parents to attend and assist with BIS’s Mother Tongue Language Day activity during Book Week

On Wednesday, March 1st, from 8 – 9:20 am, the entire BIS school will engage in an event and celebration of Mother Tongue Language Day. Students will be divided into 37 groups that represent all 17 of the languages spoken by BIS students. All parents are invited to this event to participate in our activity. We will all start at the Covered Court and then break off into our groups across campus.

Ask your child which Mother Tongue language group they are in. Additionally, that information can be found here. Your child will be continuously reminded of their group, their teacher supervisors will also have a list of students, and Primary students will have nametags that say their group and location on the day of the event but we also want to inform parents as well.

If your child is in a Mother Tongue group that has a small number of participants (or if they are by themselves), we strongly encourage you to attend with your child to help them with the activity. All groups will have a BIS teacher who knows the activity, and directions will also be printed out, but for groups with young children and groups with a few number of speakers, a parent who speaks that language would be a massive help.

Please contact Mr. Marshall at nmarshall@baliis.net or stop by the library for more information.

Batik Session in Grade 1 and Kindy Indonesian Studies

Grade 1 and Kindy students in Indonesian Studies class are learning about batik as one of the personal artifacts from Indonesia. It has been three weeks since they were first introduced to the topic.

After observing some pieces of batik clothes, they are generally able to conclude that there is a certain pattern used in a batik piece. It is so amazing that the students are able to define what a pattern is by using their own words and giving examples as well.

After observing and manipulating the tools of making batik and practicing how to create some patterns on paper, this week, Kindy and Grade 1 students are finally able to start their batik project with much simpler and more handy tools. Instead of using real canting, stamps, and liquid wax to avoid any risks,  we went with fabric markers and a canvas tote bag.
