Primary – Grade 2 Inquiring Through Mathematics

Inquiry into Where we Are in Place and Time

As we inquire into understanding our place in the world and developing global perspectives,
Grade 2 started out by learning about ourselves.

We brainstormed questions to ask our classmates in order to gather information on our connections to other places around the world and discussed important considerations of collecting data.

One of our mathematics outcomes in the strand Data Handling is collect, organise, construct and interpret displays of data.

Grade 2 worked in small groups to collect data on Languages spoken, Places of birth, Locations we have visited and Citizenship. They used tally marks, checks, lists and tables to organise responses to questions.

During this unit, students have been exposed to different types of maps as they inquire into how we represent place.

They asked “What are maps like?” and used a range of different skills and strategies to make sense of these different charts and maps. They identified several features common to all maps.

Grade 2 have been busy applying their understanding of “What maps are like?” to transfer collected data onto world maps. Having finished constructing visual representations of the ways we are connected to other places in the world…

…we wondered how else we might we be connected. “Where do we get our things from?”

Off came our shoes: China, Vietnam, Indonesia…more data fun!
