Message from the Board

Dear BIS Community,

I would like to thank those of you who attended our community meeting on Monday. For those who were unable to attend, we made a summary of the presentation which is available here: BOD PRESENTATION 2017-02-06.

The issue of communication was an overarching topic that was voiced during the meeting. As an active organization, we are doing our best to improve how we work in many areas. We are making a concerted effort to improve what we communicate, when we communicate and how we communicate with the community.

There was a reaction to the Board being remunerated for their service in the form of a waiver of one child’s tuition. The Board laid out the legality of the decision as well as the reasoning behind the decision. We recognize that the decision could have been communicated in a better manner to the community.

Another important point that was brought up was how the community can provide input into the school as there is a sense that the parent community has no voice. There are in fact a couple very important ways of contributing to the school in a very positive and constructive manner.

The first is through the Topic Groups. Topic Groups are Board driven groups set up to brainstorm and map out the ways in which the Board can achieve their goals. Topic Groups are chaired by a Board member, and include the HoS and members of our community. These groups provide the community the opportunity to contribute their ideas towards carrying out the strategic aims of the Board.

The second opportunity for contributing is through the Head of School Task Force. These are small groups the HoS sets up from time to time to help her tackle some of the extra-ordinary tasks that she faces.

A third way to help the school is by assisting the PTFA. The PTFA has many activities that help to bond the community together.

All three of these groups provide you with the opportunity to contribute to the community in different ways. It should be understood that our community plays an important function by creating an environment that is conducive for the teaching/learning process of our kids. We therefore encourage you to lend your support where and when you can to make our school atmosphere even more supportive of our kids.

Being able to have an open discussion of sensitive issues is something of which we should all be proud. We recognize that members of the community will not always have the same opinion but the ability for us to discuss these differences of opinion in a calm and professional manner shows us that the IB learner profile that we are trying to impress upon our children is also filtering down to us parents.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank you for your putting your trust for the education of your children into the hands of Bali Island School.

Regards,

Kib Roby
