Secondary Newsletter No. 17
A reminder that learning is expected to continue in classes right through until December 14 at 11.45am, all students are expected to be off campus by 12pm to enjoy their break with their families. Please be aware that there will be no adult supervision on campus after this time so please ensure your child/ren are picked up or have a way to get home. We will have a uniform free day on the last day of the semester. Teachers have been busy writing and proofreading reports and it has been great to read about how our students are developing the skills that will serve them well at and beyond school. There are many of examples of student’s communicating effectively in different ways, collaborating with others and taking leadership roles in groups, being challenged to think creatively and critically, learning to manage their time in order to meet deadlines and to produce their best work. I encourage you to carefully read the teacher comments on the reports which will be sent on Wednesday, December 12.

BIS Library seeking “Mother Tongue” books
The BIS Library is seeking some extraordinarily generous parents/students/humans to assist in expanding our “Mother Tongue”/foreign language collection. While we already have a solid foundational beginning of language books in Korean, Japanese, Spanish, German, French and Bahasa, we are looking to not only increase the depth of these books to support current students using these languages, but to expand and include other languages.
So, if during your holiday travels you come across some potential resources or if these books are already in your home collections you are no longer using and are in good condition, please consider donating books in your families’ native language to the BIS Library. We would be extremely grateful and would credit your family/names for the donation with a note in the book for those who enjoy them in the future to recognize.
Thank you in advance and if you have any questions, please simply ask me.

Individuals and Societies Grade 9
This semester students worked on a unit titled ‘The Industrial Revolution and the impacts on the modern world’. This is quite a heavy topic which we could have talked about for a whole year! But we narrowed our focus to the concepts shown in Figure 1 and decided we wanted our students to understand that while innovation in the Industrial Revolution stimulated progress and change, social and economic development was not always equal. This was quite a challenging unit but our students really delved deep and our latest assessment had students writing their own research question based on the social issues of the working class. They could choose to focus on either causality or change as their main concept and we also gave them room to choose their own method of demonstrating the outcome of their research. Here are a few of quality examples of student which we hope you enjoy.

Model United Nations
After an extremely successful BaliMUN Conference in November which saw multiple BIS students take home awards such as “Best Delegate” and the “Leadership Award” in their respective committees, our upper Secondary students will be continuing their Model United Nations activities by attending the 6th annual Yale Model United Nations Taiwan conference at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan from March 15 – 17, 2019. The event is sponsored by the Yale International Relations Association and will feature committees such as the UN Human Rights Council, the European Union, the UN Security Council, the International Atomic Energy Agency and more. Stay tuned for more information as the conference draws near; accommodations, travel, logistics and visas processes are in the beginning stages and any necessary updates will be communicated to you. Thank you and any inquiries can be directed to myself or our Student Model United Nations Director, JaeYeon Lee.

Grade 10 Sharing of the Arts
On Tuesday December 4, the Grade 10 Music and Drama classes shared performances from their coursework with Grade 9, secondary teachers and parents. The work of the Visual Arts students will continue to be exhibited in DWAR (room in the library) up until December 14.
The Drama students have been learning about the essential skills necessary for physical, ensemble style performances and how to devise an original piece of theatre for an invited audience. They were presented with two starting points – the Banksy image ‘Mobile Phone Lovers’ and the phrase ‘The Space Between….’ and, this term, collaboratively created a 10 minute performance using these an inspiration. They employed a variety of abstract techniques and chose to perform in traverse, with the audience sitting on two sides rather than the traditional ‘end on’ configuration. This challenged them to ensure the audience were always engaged and also consider ways in which they used proxemics to denote relationships. The students were both nervous and excited to present their work to the Grade 9 students, staff and parents and are already looking forward to the next performance opportunity!
The musicians presented three songs from their Musical Form unit and were professional in conduct throughout and demonstrated excellent ensemble skills.
Here are some pictures from the performances and exhibition.

After a very long hiatus from touch rugby due to breaking my femur and knee cap at the beginning of the school year (August) I am finally back with the touch rugby group. For now I do not play as I still cannot run but I now will try to attend the games after-school on Thursday to support and give tips to each player. Last Saturday (24th) a touch rugby competition was held at Fin’s Recreational Club in Canggu which I was excited to attend. I was given the job of manager and I gave players tips, reflected with the team after games and also gave some tips on the teams that we were going to play just to give the team an idea on how their opponents would be playing. Sadly we only had 6 people show up to the event from our team which gave us no subs. In the future I would like to mention this to those teammates that did not commit as many of the other teams mentioned that it would be beneficial to us if we have some subs to let our team mates have some rest throughout the game. Some teams were nice enough to help us out and sub for us in the later games as they noticed that our players were getting a bit tired in the first few games. The overall score for our team was 2 wins and 3 losses however we did make it into the finals for the lower groups but we chose to forfeit as we needed subs and we thought it would not be considered fair to use other team members to play for us throughout the game. The main things that our team needed to work on was our passing and communication. Some players would not look while passing or pass to quick so I would mention that at the end of the game and our playing greatly improved in the next match. Communication was a whole team effort as some players were unsure whether to run forward or pass to another player to slip through the gap. I found the experience fun and joyful and it was great being back on the team even though I could not play. Next year I will hopefully join the team again and organise another tournament based in Sanur and invite other teams from around the island to come and join us.

Antrabez Special Visit – Monday December 10
We have a special event planned for Monday afternoon in the MPR.
Antrabez is a famous rock band whose members have suffered serious consequences because of involvement with illegal drugs and activity. However, they are trying to take their situation and turn into something positive for others to learn from. The members of the group (who are currently incarcerated) have been given permission by the government to travel to schools and share their stories relating to education and awareness of the dangers of being involved in drugs.
They will perform some songs for us and answer questions that students will provide at the session this Monday. This is a wonderful opportunity for our to increase our awareness of this serious issue and support our guests in their process of redemption. Parents are also welcome to come at one of the times below to witness this unique event.
Schedule:
Grades 9,10,11 & 12 – Period 6 in the MPR
Grades 6,7 & 8 – Period 7 in the MPR
Click Here to watch a film clip of one of their original songs called “Indonesia” featuring a number of famous outside guests, including Robi Supriyanto (Navicula) and Sandrayati Fay (BIS Alumni).
Have a great weekend and week ahead everyone.
