Leaving Students

As we come to the end of Semester 1, we have to say goodbye to some of our students who will be leaving Bali Island School for schools in Australia, the US and Costa Rica. While it is sad to be saying goodbye to some of our friends, we will be welcoming some new students to Bali Island School at the beginning of next semester.

Goodbye & good luck to Jamison and Billy from Pre School 4, Hamish, Ashley and Jacob from Grade 1, Timmy and Billie from Grade 3 and Makayla from Grade 5

Kindergarten Excursion to Bali Bird Park

How does nature inspire the arts?  As part of our unit of inquiry, Kindergarten went to visit Bali Bird Park to find out more about how we can be inspired.  Students had the opportunity to feed the birds, hold them, and learn about all the birds that live at the park. They also saw a bird show and watched a 4D move that taught them about migration.  After our visit, students used the inspiration from nature to create different types of bird art. These pieces will add this to the art gallery they have been working on which will be open for viewing at the end of January.

Grade 2 Excursion to Taman Nusa

How do homes reflect family values and local cultures? To gain a deeper understanding of this central idea, Grade 2 students went on an excursion to Taman Nusa Cultural Park. The purpose of the trip was to explore and research traditional homes of Indonesia. Each student selected a house style to create a research report on. At the park, students were able to tour the actual home, as well as ask questions about cultural and symbolic elements of the home that reflect the local culture and family values of those who live there. Back at school, students created sketches and added their information to their reports, which will be ready to share the beginning of Term 3.

Grade 4 Excursion to Taman Nusa

As part of Finding Out for their inquiry into How Indigenous architecture influences the design of buildings and structures, Grade 4 visited Taman Nusa Cultural Village in Gianyar. Earlier, at school, students had conducted experiments to test different properties of various building materials. They used their observations and collected data to make generalisations about: strength, hardness, thermal conductivity and water resistance. Students built on this understanding when visiting Taman Nusa, identifying various materials used in the construction of houses from the different provinces of Indonesia and suggesting reasons they were selected including: location, available resources, environment and culture.

A range of structural and design features were observed. These observations, prompted student questions about the purpose of these unique architectural features. Some questions were answered by Taman Nusa attendants and some will be followed up with research at school. Grade 4 will use their knowledge to design a structure for the school in Term 3.

Adventures of Jessica James

The Primary Drama Club put on two very successful performances of the Adventures of Jessica James during the week. They had a packed house of family and friends on Wednesday night and performed to another full house of primary students on Thursday morning. Huge thank you to Dr Michelle Shepherd for directing and to the middle school students in the stage crew. Congratulations to all of the students for all of the hard work that you have put in over the last few months as it resulted in a great show. Below is a video of the closing song. The full video will be ready to share with families after the school holiday.

With a little help from my friends

Our music teacher, Ibu Isti has been working with our students over the last month or so learning With a little help from my friends. All of the students finally had the chance to sing together with the teachers at our last assembly. Have a look at the video to enjoy their wonderful singing – please excuse the ordinary camera work.

Reports

Primary Reports were emailed to families on Wednesday afternoon. Please take the time to go through your child’s report and discuss it with them. If you or your child have any questions about the reports, please speak to the teacher who completed the section of the report you have questions about.
