We will also be inviting parents who have young children who are not currently enrolled at Bali IS.
Healthy Snacks and Lunches
Over the last few weeks, the teachers have been introducing the Pick & Mix Healthy Lunch Box to our Primary Students. We are suggesting that student should have something in their lunch box every day from Groups 1 – 6.
Group 1 – Fruit
Group 2 – Vegetables
Group 3 – Milk, Yoghurt & Cheese
Group 4 – Meat or Meat Alternative
Group 5 – Grain & Cereal Food
Group 6 – Water

Sweet and savoury snack foods (eg muesli bars, biscuits, crisps, cakes, muffins & slices) should be limited in lunchboxes. Sugar sweetened drinks and confectionery should not be provided in lunchboxes. Source https://heas.health.vic.gov.au/schools/healthy-lunchboxes
In last week’s Primary Assembly, the whole Primary School looked at the Pick & Mix model and tried scoring some lunchbox samples to see if they were healthy and what we could add or take away to make them healthier. This week we began putting some of the Pick & Mix posters on the lunch tables so the students could have a look at their own lunches. Hopefully they may come home over the next week or two with requests for mixing up their lunches and also may consider the choices they’re making when ordering their lunches from our food providers.
Grade 1 Economics
Grade 1 are learning about money and financial mathematics by exploring notes and coins. We are learning to recognise, describe and order coins according to their values and experiment with counting note and coin collections. When adding money, Grade 1 are learning to always start with the biggest bill or coin and add from there, working down to the smallest denomination. When making change, students have been practicing their addition and subtraction skills that we have been developing this year. In economics, we have been learning that Money can be used to pay for goods and services and to measure the value of things and that Currency is a term for a country’s money and comes in the form of coins and bills.
What Does Inquiry Look Like?
As part of our unit of inquiry about exploration, Grade 3 students have been exploring the Essential Elements of the PYP and discovering how to guide their own inquiry. The 5 Essential Elements are: Concepts, Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes and Action. We took the Concepts (‘key’ in pink and ‘related’ in blue) and, as part of the Research Skills (Formulating Questions and Planning), designed some questions that show connections between the concepts. Through the research process, they will uncover the Knowledge needed to demonstrate an understanding of our Central Idea: Exploration leads to discoveries, opportunities and new understandings. We look forward to continuing the Research Process with help from Mr Marshall as we go further in the inquiry by: gathering and recording data, synthesizing and interpreting information and finishing up with communicating our findings.
