2019/20 Secondary Timetable

For the past few months we have been investigating alternative block timetables in the Secondary School for the 2019/20 school year. The reasons for this include:

  • Maximising quality learning time by having less lost time in transitions between classes
  • Reducing the number of lessons teachers have to prepare for, meaning more opportunities for quality, collaborative and meaningful planning time leading towards better learning experiences and outcomes for students
  • Opening opportunities for more inquiry, projects, experiments and collaborative learning
  • Reducing the number of classes where daily homework is issued

After much research and consultation with our teachers we have decided on the following:

  • Each day will continue to start at 7.45am and finish at 2.45pm with lunch still at 12.30pm
  • We will use a 2 week schedule (Week A and Week B)
  • There will be 4 x 80 minute lessons each day structured as follows
0745 – 0800 Homeroom
0800 – 0920 Period 1
0920 – 0940 Break
0940 – 1100 Period 2
1100 – 1110 Short Break
1110 – 1230 Period 3
1230 – 1325 Lunch
1325 – 1445 Period 4
1500 – 1600 ASA

Please note the timetable has been designed to ensure we not only meet but surpass IB Diploma, Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) requirements. Accounting for days lost for events such as exams and EOTC, the students will still have face-to-face contact with their teachers in each subject over the two-year programme of:

  • HL subjects – 6 lessons each two weeks = 252 hours (minimum 240 hours required)
  • SL subjects – 5 lesson each two weeks = 210 hours (minimum 150 hours required)

All MYP subjects are also scheduled at well above the required annual hours for each subject in each grade level.
