BIS dominates at 6th Annual Yale Model United Nations in Taipei, Taiwan
Held from March 15-17 at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel in midtown Taipei, Taiwan, the most recent YMUNT conference saw the four Bali Island delegates in attendance perform extraordinarily. Nahel Sinan won the Best Delegate Award for the SOCHUM committee (representing the country of Yemen), Charles Kneipp won Outstanding Delegate for the Arab League committee (also representing Yemen) and Raihan Woodhouse won Best Delegate for the UN Security Council committee (representing Germany). Dinda Winkler also attended and was a featured and frequent contributor to the UNSC committee representing the Dominican Republic. The BIS delegates put in the research and preparation here weeks and months prior to the event, and their country profiles, research reports and position papers really allowed them to hit the ground running once at the actual conference. Keep an eye out of our younger Secondary delegates attending MYMUN in Kuala Lumpur in a few weeks.

Gamut Workshop
Last Thursday and Friday MYP Indonesian students joined cultural workshop with Bapak Made Agus Wardana, who is well-known as Bli Ciaaattt. Bapak Made is a Balinese artist who has been living in Belgium for the last 22 years. Moreover, he has established various musical and artistic groups in Belgium as well as Bali. His presence in a new country has swayed him to admire his own culture to a greater extent.
The workshops were aimed to expose MYP Indonesian students with a cultural experience of the host country and at the same time give an opportunity to apply their soft skills in practicing the gamelan mulut collaboratively. During the 50 minutes Indonesian lesson, students were engaged and keen on learning the exciting way of the Balinese art performance, such as Kecak, modern gamelan beatboxing, and Balinese dance movement.
Gamut Reflection from Alex Sandner G10
Grade 7 Marketing & Advertisement Unit
This term, students have worked in pairs to complete an advertisement campaign based on one of the grade 10 personal project products. In this unit, students studied different advertisements, both print ads and television commercials, as well as common persuasive techniques used in advertisements, pathos/logos/ethos, how to choose and reach a specific target audience, and how common stereotypes are used in commercials today. Additionally, students had to interview the grade 10 student who designed the product, working in conjunction with them to make a sales pitch presentation. Below are samples of the students’ print advertisements, presentations, television advertisements, and quotes from their reflections.
Nadia & Dmitrii: (TV AD video link)
Dmitrii: “I liked this task because when communicating with your partner, I’m thinking we did well with the print advertisement and tv advertisement.”
Nadia: “Our editing of the video also went really well. This is because Dmitrii edited part of the video, and I edited the rest. He also taught me new editing skills which helped me to make parts of the TV advertisement more interesting.”
Frances & Lucas:
Frances: “When we were showing our audience both our advertisements, they seemed entertained and hooked while watching and seeing them. They laughed and when we told the techniques that were being shared; they nodded subtly in agreement.”
Lucas: “When we were brainstorming the ad, we immediately thought we would do slogans, magic ingredients, and avante garde. We decided to choose these because the guitar had 99% wood because the most of the guitar was pure wood.”
Jose & Sophia: (TV AD video link)
Jose: “We explained each technique we used and what that technique meant. We also created amazing advertisements and impressed the creator of the filter bottle.”
Sophia: “We both did well in giving each other ideas and collaborating together because when I was stuck on making the print ad he helped me and gave me a lot of ideas.”
Sofia & Josiah:
Sofia: “I feel happy and proud of my final presentation, because we always checked the checklist to make sure everything was there, and I think we did a really good job communicating with each other in the end.”
Josiah: “The whole process of this assignment was really fun. This assignment was very meaningful and I learnt a lot. Some of things I learnt is that when you are presenting you need to sound persuasive and to sound like you know what you are talking about.”
Choi & Saskia:
Saskia: “This unit was meaningful because it teaches us something that is fun, interesting and possibly useful in the future. I feel that our whole process of brainstorming, creating and finalizing was interesting and fun.”
Choi: “Working together and planning together went well while working with my partner, because we can decide when we want to practise, when to meet, and other things. We can work together and better.”
Ralvian & Cynthia: (TV AD video link)
Ralvian: “Since Cynthia and I had the skills that were required, we did very well with making the presentation, the print and video ad. Cynthia and I worked really well with each other. We were able to get things done in the time period we wanted to.”
Cynthia: “When Ralvian and I presented our slideshow, we knew what we were going to say and weren’t nervous at all. What we could have improved on with our presentation would be speaking louder and slower, I went really fast at some points, it was probably because I was too excited.”
Isabella & James: (TV AD video link)
Isabella: “I would definitely do this assignment again because I thought it was quite exciting to create an advertisement from scratch and learning about the different techniques. In this unit, I learned a great amount about advertisement strategies and creating an advertisement.”
James: “The most challenging part for me was creating the actual video ad. I had to take pictures from creative commons and cite them all. But at the end, the video looked really well and convincing.”
Uma & Leah:
Uma: “I think that Leah and I were able to work well together. We were able to come up with ideas nicely and decided which ideas we should use. One thing that we could’ve worked harder on is communication and time management.”
Leah: “I think that Uma and I did well on double checking each other’s work and then telling each other what else we should add, and I think that our communication was really good. If we need to do anything, we would either send an email or call each other to say what we need to finish.”
Amelie & William: (TV AD video link)
Amelie: “ I learned a lot from this project, something I learnt is that the advertisers use a lot of different techniques to make the viewer want to purchase the product. I also learnt different techniques that are good to use. I also learnt how advertisements lie to you.”
William: “I was really happy with my progress of improvement, not only that I have improved on my confidence when presenting, my eye contact, voice tone, and pace, but I have also improved on working/communicating with a person that I have never worked with before.”

Second Meeting: Creating posters for hygiene awareness on November 2nd, 2018.
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
As an active group, aiming to implement changes in our school environment, we are moving at a very fast and active pace. From our first meeting, we identified multiple problems within our school that we can help change or improve. We decided to first target the issue of hygiene within our school, more specifically bathroom hygiene. We targeted this issue because it is the easiest and we don’t want to be tackling very large issues at our school just yet. As a group, we suggested that an easy and efficient method of promoting healthier bathroom hygiene can be done by creating awareness posters, reminding students and staffs to consider better bathroom hygiene. The challenge I faced was being able to find facts or use techniques that would catch the attention of students and staff to improve the bathroom hygiene. This was difficult because most people will ignore posters that have to do with hygiene, however, I developed new ideas that would help the students catch attention to how important hygiene is. I did this by researching really gruesome facts about bacteria in the toilet that will really capture the student’s attention. From the challenge being undertaken, I also learned a lot about hygiene and graphic designing techniques (how to use colors and shapes and texts to capture the audience’s attention).
