Secondary Newsletter No. 33 – May 3, 2019

Well done to our Swimming team on an outstanding performance at both the IISSAC and BSSA meets over the past week. BIS won every trophy there is to win and many individual records were broken. Grade 12 started their final exams today and we wish them all the next over the next three weeks.

The Group 4 Project

On Monday 13th May 2019 Grade 11 students will be taking part in the group 4 project.  Below is an excerpt from the IB guide explaining the reasoning behind the project, a compulsory part of the IB diploma:

“The group 4 project is a collaborative activity where students from different group 4 subjects work together on a scientific or technological topic, allowing for concepts and perceptions from across the science disciplines to be shared to “develop an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and their influence on other areas of knowledge”.  The group 4 project allows students to appreciate the environmental, social and ethical implications of science and technology. It may also allow them to understand the limitations of scientific study, for example, the shortage of appropriate data and/or the lack of resources. The emphasis is on interdisciplinary cooperation and the processes involved in scientific investigation.”

Students will begin the planning of the project in science lessons prior to the date of the project, they will collect their data on Monday 13th May and will present the details of their investigations on Tuesday 14th May from 3.00 – 4.00 pm in room 15.  Parents, peers and staff are cordially invited to the presentations where the students will demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have gained during the project.

Grade 10 DP Step-up Days

Grade 10s are in the closing stages of finalising their DP subject choices for the next academic year. They have already submitted their proposed choices with an explanation why for each subject. With the Grade 12s starting their IB DP exams today, the Grade 12 teachers will give two taster classes in their subject that Grade 10s can attend. The DP step up days will run on May 6 & 7. The students will be given an overview of the subject syllabus and expectations and will be set some work, possibly homework, that is indicative of the level they will be working at next year. For students who are still unsure about which subject to take [Ex. Business Management or History for Group 3] they can attend one class each for the subjects in that group. It is hoped that this experience will further help students confirm their subject selection and that they will not need to make changes to their selected subjects at the start of Grade 11. Their final course selection document is due on Friday May 10.

ISTA Middle School Theatre Festival 2020

We are very excited to announce a fabulous opportunity for Grade 6 and 7 students for next academic year (2019-2020). BIS are hosting a Middle School ISTA Festival, March 6th – 8th 2020!

ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association) is a UK based organisation and has been running for over 40 years delivering superb Middle and High School Theatre Festivals, DP Theatre Festivals, Professional Development and Artist In Residence Programmes all over the world.

Middle School Theatre Festivals are created specifically students who have a real passion and love for theatre. They will work in ensembles alongside theatre students from Beijing, Bangkok and Malaysia, led by professional international artists learning new, exciting skills and techniques to feed directly into their growing theatre knowledge. This is an incredibly rare and unique opportunity and the difference it can make to students’ understanding is immense. The 3 day Festival will culminate in a final sharing performance to parents and the BIS community on the Sunday afternoon.

For more information please visit https://ista.co.uk/events/festivals/. If you would like to register your initial interest for your child please read this letter and complete the Google Form to place your child’s name on the Initial Interest List. Places will be allocated based on order of response, students’ genuine interest and passion for drama, full participation for all 3 days, and the family’s ability to offer full hosting.

Thank you!!

IISSAC Swimming at Surabaya, Jessica Lu

This year’s champions of IISSAC 2019 are both the BIS girls and boys teams, with the overall score of 700 points. This will be my last IISSAC swimming and I am proud that I am ending this by bringing back home the trophies, medals, and banners. Although the competition is mostly individual, I’ve improved my teamwork skills during relays, we used our communication skills and discussed on our relay orders. My strengths were my endurance, but I still need to work on my starts, so this will be one of my goals to achieve for next year. There were definitely moments where I was on the verge of giving up because of how stressful and tiring it was, however, I didn’t and I stayed committed because a lot of people were supporting and cheering. This includes the coaches, parents, and other swimmers. We wouldn’t be able to win this if it was our coach dedicating their time to train us hard. My favorite part of IISSAC is when everyone is supporting one another by cheering on each other. Hopefully, BIS can bring more trophies and medals back for next year.
