Mini Olympics & BIS Athletics Carnival
Just a reminder that next week on Tuesday the 21st of May, we will have the Mini Olympics for students from PS to G2. This event will start at 8am on the big field and hopefully conclude just after 9:30am. Students can wear their house colours to school for the day as we will be tallying points for house groups. Homeroom teachers will be rotating with their class through each event. A specialist teacher will be at each station along with an experienced Grade 5 student to assist. The ‘Rest’ station is a time for students to rehydrate and reflect on their performances so far. Ribbons will be awarded for all participants in PS and Kindy, while Grades 1 and 2 will receive a ribbon for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. A reminder also, that the full Athletics Carnival will take place the following day, same location, but for students from G3 and up. Students will need hats and water bottles with them for the morning as well. See you all out there on Tuesday morning.

Removed books from the BIS Library looking for a new home
The BIS Library has removed hundreds of Secondary Fiction and Nonfiction books that were either outdated, in poor condition, irrelevant or unused for years from our collection. We are asking those of you who may know any local schools, organisations or even individuals and families that may be interested in receiving some of these books. If so, please contact the library so we can make arrangements for these books to find a new home if the can provide value to someone else.
Any members of the BIS community who may have an interest in these books are also welcomed to come take a look; anyone can take any of the discarded books free of charge.
Thank you,
The BIS Library

What’s Been Happening in the Primary School Recently
Below is a summary of some of the fantastic learning that has been taking place across the school in recent weeks. Teachers post many of these things on their class blogs, but by sharing them on the eNews all families get a chance to see what is happening in other grade levels.
Primary Talent Show
Thank you to all of the parents who were able to join us last Friday for the Primary StuCo Talent Show. It was great to see students from Grades 2 – 5 so confidently performing dancing, singing, gymnastics and playing a range of instruments. Please click here to view or download the video.
Grade 4 Camp
One of the benefits of participating in the Grade 4 camp is service as action: the learning by doing and experience that students engage in over the two days. This year’s camp had a focus on self-awareness, team building and developing a deeper understanding of the attributes of the Learner Profile through building skills and overcoming challenges.
Their experience began with designing a camp menu, identifying tasks and assuming responsibilities within the group.
Day one started with campsite design and tent assembly with the assistance of some parental expertise. Tents quickly morphed into personal spaces as our campers added their bedding, gear and individual comforts from home.
Part of this day was dedicated to further interactions with Kupu Kupu Foundation, with students designing games and activities to promote mobility, balance, and fun for students with disabilities. The lunch group, with the help of Mr. Eldred, prepared and served a delicious barbecue which was shared with our guests before teaching through modeling how to use recycling bins. Three bins were donated to Kupu Kupu Foundation with funds raised from the Grade 4 market day.
Our afternoon started with a blessing ceremony hosted by students and supported by Ibu Ketut and finished with making smores around the campfire, a movie, and flashlight games, before campers settled in for the night.
Early and not so bright (the moon was still up) on the morning of Day 2, campers began to rise. Tents were disassembled, breakfast prepared and the picnic lunch packed for our day out at Treetops Adventure Park: ropes and climbing course. Students demonstrating commitment and perseverance as they were personally challenged. Enthusiasm and involvement over the two days by the students was boundless, needless to say, it was a quiet bus ride back to school at the end of camp! Well done, Campers!
Kindergarten Rice Field Excursion
Kindy had the opportunity to visit Kertalangu Rice Field as an end to our unit on how water is a natural resource and essential to life. We have been learning about how water is an important resource, all the ways we use water daily, and how to help conserve our water use.
On our trip, students learned about the role water plays in community farming here in Bali. We talked about how all the community members have to decide when to put water on the fields and when to stop. We saw the ways people worked to build mini-dams to stop the water from entering parts of the field.
One highlight was students were able to try and plant their own rice seedlings. Students were risk takers as they entered the knee-deep mud to learn how to how ensuring the seedlings have time to grow is essential to rice production.
Preschool Parents Sharing about Family Celebration
This term, preschool students are learning about celebration. The students were finding out why people celebrate some events and how people celebrate. We invited preschool parents to become our guest speakers to talk about an important celebration in their family. The children created a poster to summarize the information they learnt from the guest speakers. It was a great oportunity for the students to learn about their own family celebration as well as others. They are learning about showing respect to others’ beliefs and traditions. A big thank you to all our families for their time and presentations. The children have been able to represent their growing knowledge on the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of different celebrations through posters.
Yearbook Committee
The efforts of the Yearbook Committee have been running full speed as we prepare to send the book to the publisher for printing! This fantastic team, with the support of Pak Agus and Ibu Heather, have been chipping away at various tasks throughout the year. We started in Term 1 reviewing last year’s book and making decisions about what we need to keep and change. During Term 2, we focussed on gathering information for our beautiful cover and allocating tasks for committee members to complete such as writing articles and gathering photos. In Terms 3 and 4, we started reviewing completed pages and sections, editing them ready to print.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the hands that worked together to make it all happen: our Committee; all the homeroom students and teachers for designing their pages; the coaches for sharing photos of the sporting events; the teachers who accompanied students on domestic and international excursions for their photos and reports; the teachers for sharing photos of all aspects of the curriculum; and last but not least, a very special thank you goes to Pak Agus for taking all of our students’ designs and ideas and turning them into magic on paper! Keep an eye out for the latest edition of the BIS Yearbook coming your way on June 7!
