Secondary Newsletter No. 35 – May 17, 2019

As the weeks fly by, we are entering the final stanza of the school year. There is still plenty happening and coming up for the remainder of the school year. Please note that next Wednesday prior to the Athletics Day we will be asking all students, teachers and parents to stand and spell out a word relating to climate change. We welcome as many parents as we can get there from 7.45am to help with this task. The photograph taken will be shared with other international schools who are doing the same thing. We will share all of the photos with our community in coming weeks.

A reminder that all students are expected to attend school until the end of the school year. We will finish the school year with a whole school assembly at 11am on June 12. Classes will be running right up until this day. Grade 9-11 exams are running from Monday, May 27 until Wednesday, May 29.

Removed books from the BIS Library looking for a new home

The BIS Library has removed hundreds of Secondary Fiction and Nonfiction books that were either outdated, in poor condition, irrelevant or unused for years from our collection. We are asking those of you who may know any local schools, organizations or even individuals and families that may be interested in receiving some of these books to let us know if we can facilitate some donations. If so, please contact the library so we can make arrangements for these books to find a new home if they can provide value to someone else.

Any members of the BIS community who may have an interest in these books are also welcomed to come take a look; anyone can take any of the discarded books free of charge.

Thank you,

The BIS Library

Exams for Grades 9-10 are two weeks away. It is a busy and no doubt stressful time for these students. Most teachers have already provided students with information on what they need to study for in each subject.  In order to help ease exam anxiety, students should create a study calendar that maps out what they should be studying for on a daily basis. Using this type of plan helps reassure the students that sticking to this strategy should enable them to be successful on the day. Please see a good exam preparation timetable example below (Source: Monash University)

ISTA Middle School Theatre Festival 2020

Don’t miss out!! There are still some places available to sign up for this fabulous opportunity for Grade 6, 7 and 8 students for next academic year (2019-2020).

BIS are super excited to be hosting a Middle School ISTA Festival, March 6th – 8th 2020! ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association) is a UK based organisation and has been running for over 40 years delivering superb Theatre Festivals all over the world.

Middle School Theatre Festivals are created specifically students who love theatre and drama. They will work in ensembles led by professional international artists and performers, learning new, exciting drama games, skills and techniques to feed directly into their growing theatre knowledge alongside visiting students from Beijing, Bangkok and Malaysia.

This is an incredibly rare and unique opportunity and the difference it can make to students’ understanding is immense.

The 3 day Festival will culminate in a final sharing performance on the Sunday afternoon so parents and the whole school community will be able to enjoy the final performance!

For more information please visit https://ista.co.uk/events/festivals/ or email me at salborn@baliis.net

If you would like to register your initial interest for your child please read this letter and complete the Google Form to place your child’s name on the Initial Interest List.

Places will be allocated based on order of response, students’ genuine interest and passion for drama, full participation for all 3 days, and the family’s ability to offer full hosting.

Thank you!!

Smooth Transitions: (for Primary and Secondary parents)

Is your family moving? Though we are sad to see you go we definitely want your transition to be a smooth one. To help with this, I am meeting with all students departing BIS at the end of this year and giving each of them a RAFT.  Each student will meet with me to talk about how they feel about moving and will be given a RAFT booklet. The RAFT concept can be used by the whole family and helps transition to our new home without feelings of regret or unfinished business. The R stands for Reconciliation; is there anyone in your life here you need to apologize to or have a heart to heart with?  This is the time for reconciliation. The A stands for Affirmations; are there people here you’d like to thank for helping and supporting you? Now is the time to show them your appreciation. The F stands for Farewell; Are there people, places, pets, or possessions you’ll be saying goodbye to?  Now is the time to visit those special people and places one more time and relinquish pets and possessions to new owners with whom you know they’ll be in good hands. The T stands for Think Destination; What are you excited about and looking forward to in your new home? Now is the time to Talk about your new school, your new home, and the new opportunities that will be available to you there. We wish all departing families a smooth transition to your new homes and will continue to hold you in our hearts here at BIS, where you have each left a positive imprint.

Recap of Lesson

For the last two lessons, the kids have been focusing on all the things we have covered so far, to make sure the kids are actually learning and developing their skills the way I would like them too. So in today’s lesson I finally started the routine I introduced to the kids two weeks ago, which from now on every lesson the kids will do. After that, I introduced something new to the kids called diving because I wanted to show the kids what we will start working on for the upcoming lessons and I wanted to know what level the kids were at in terms of their driving agility. After all of this, I let the kids do some races against each other for 3 different strokes because they wanted to see who was fastest.

Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

In today’s lesson, I was able to identify my strengths and areas of which I need to improve on. My strength today was my knowledge because over the last couple of months I have been learning about the kids and the different levels of swimming they are at, so using my knowledge on where the kids need help I was able to improve on their endurance and core strength, through the routine I created. However, the area I must grow on for next week is my energy level because in today’s lesson I was very tired, due to lack of sleep over the last week, which affected the amount of energy and enthusiasm I usually have with the kids.
