BIS Career Day – January 23, 2020

College and Career Counseling

BIS Career Day 2020 was a huge success!

This year’s Career Day was a huge success, with 24 professionals coming to our campus to inspire our secondary students and share about their fascinating careers in a wide variety of professions.  The STUCO students did a great job guiding the panelists and leading the panels and Q&A process.

Kaycee Odom, counselor, sales exec, and human resource director, wowed the audience with her keynote address titled, “How to Make a Career out of Personal Growth.” Ms. Odom encouraged students to, “Stretch your threshold for discomfort” and shared 4 specific pieces of wisdom:

  1. “You don’t have to choose a Career. You can be whoever you want.” Once you become WHO you want to be you can fit into any career.

  2. Make it your daily practice to grow in three areas:

    1. Head – What thoughts do you tell yourself-or listen to from someone else-that actually keep you from growing?

    2. Heart – Have the emotional courage to deal with what we feel

    3. Hands – This is our actions and the actions that others see of us first

  3. Live with Intention. It will take you far- Live every day toward your biggest dreams or goals.

  4. Embrace your Unique Self- “Find your People; you don’t have to be a Sheople!”

Ms. Odom also encouraged students to think about and prepare their 15 minute “elevator speech”- a brief conversation they could have with someone that encapsulates all of their best qualities.

Here are a few quotes from the students on what they learned during Career Day:

“What I learned was that life will always take you on a ride and that your degree doesn’t really determine what you would end up doing because everything goes with the flow.”

“Choosing a career isn’t something to be done quickly, you don’t need to decide right away.”

“I learned during the Psychology panel that mindfulness and self-balance is very important to your own work. Putting time for yourself is key for greater performance and happiness.”

“Do what I enjoy and follow my guts”

A special thank you to those BIS graduates and parents who participated on the panels! Thanks for making the day a success for our students.
