International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) Testing

ISA testing will take place for Grade 3-10 students on the mornings of Tuesday 11th February and Wednesday 12th February. These tests include Writing, Reading and Mathematical Literacy. Please ensure your child/ren attend on these days as this data provides us with specific information which is used to evaluate many aspects of our curriculum and of how our students are performing compared to students in other ‘like schools’ around the world. You will receive a report once the results have been shared with the school. Primary students will do trial testing in the week leading up to the assessment  to ensure they are clear on the process and the types of questions they will be asked. A letter will be sent out to parents with more detail about this before the end of January.

What’s Been Happening in the Primary School Recently

Below is a summary of some of the fantastic learning that has been taking place across the school in recent weeks. Teachers post many of these things on their class blogs but by sharing them on the eNews it gives families a chance to see what is happening in other grade levels.

Mathematical Inquiry in Grade 1 – Celebrating our 100th day of Learning

According to the International Baccalaureate (IB), it is important that PYP teachers provide their students with the opportunity to “speculate and pursue hunches”, and to use a variety of strategies for solving problems. The Kindy, Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes used our 100th day of school to celebrate and learn more about the number 100. Prior to this special day, students built their understanding of 100 using estimation, comparisons, sequencing allowing students to construct their own meaning and apply this meaning in a variety of new ways.

We began our morning completing a variety of exercises to the tune of 100. After we had activated our brains, students were divided into groups and worked through a variety of rotations which included making necklaces with 100 Froot Loops, building with 100 blocks, creating 100 paper chains, serving themselves 100 pieces of “stew” and lining up 100 dominoes. Students were also asked to bring in 100 items to deepen their understanding of what 100 actually looks like.

In the PYP, we believe that that “learners acquire mathematical understanding by constructing their own meaning…starting with personal experiences.” Our preparations for the 100th day allowed students to develop skills using hands on materials as well as developing a variety of skills such as comparing, ordering, estimating and rechecking.
