STUCO Annual Valentine’s Dance 2020

By Malikha Aryantantra

Last Friday on the 14th of February, STUCO organized our second outside of school Valentine’s Dance event. Most of the secondary students attended the Valentine dance and from the STUCO perspective, we think it was very successful! Our organization skills were for sure improving compared to last year. We are also very thankful to all the teachers who volunteered to supervise our event.

STUCO groups put in a lot of effort and time to make this one of the biggest and memorable events in the year for all the students. Currently, we are collecting feedback from all students who attended the dance. We hope we can improve and make this event better each year!

Arts Sharing Showcase – Feb 2020

On Friday, February 14th the Grade 6 and 7 students showcased their artistic endeavours in the culmination of their second Arts Rotation. In celebration of their creativity, each discipline shared work with their parents in a Drama performance and mini-workshop, a Music performance, and interactive activities and a Visual Art Exhibition and Q&A.

The Drama students have been studying the origins of Mask Theatre and the associated performance skills and conventions of this highly expressive genre of performance. We started by leading a warm-up Drama game to parents and we were very impressed by their energy! In addition, the students performed their own original devised performances relying solely on their body language and gestures to communicate. After the performances, the students hosted a Q&A about their devising process and demonstrated some of the ways in which they had developed their characters. A great ending to the second rotation!

The Music students have been studying rhythms and melodies from different cultures. The first pieces presented were a djembe-drumming piece inspired by African rhythms. The final piece shared at the event was “Volare”, which allowed us to showcase a fusion of musical styles with African djembe rhythms combined with Spanish Flamenco chords. The last activity consisted of the students attempting to teach their parents their parts. We made a mighty big sound and it was a lovely way to finish the second rotation of Music.

The Visual Art students have been investigating skateboard deck designs, using their creative thinking skills to develop ideas and create original logos and designs. They acquired and applied techniques and skills using a variety of drawing and painting techniques in the creation of their own skateboard deck which were completed and exhibited in our end of rotation B on Friday. Their work was a wonderful, colorful and striking display of their creativity.

Thank you to all the parents and staff who came and supported the sharing event! We hope to see you all at our final Grade 6/7 Sharing Showcase in May! Watch this creative space 🙂
