Bali Math Competition (BMC)
Description and Goals :
Bali Math Competition (BMC) is a math competition that is held every year, and it is to gather students from different schools in Bali – those who enjoy doing math – giving them the opportunity to compete with one and another, but also encouraging them to interact and socialize with various groups. This competition allows students to explicitly present their abilities as well as develop their skills in Mathematics. I decided to be a part of initiating this project during the first-mid semester and I am planning to continue this by the end of 2021 BMC. My team, our school supervisor, and I have had meetings in order to share our ideas and plan for the overall project. Due to the global pandemic, we realized that it would be quite difficult for us to meet often offline, thus, we only decided to meet whenever important objectives needed to be discussed.

In this BMC project, I aim to develop my ATL skills such as organizational and communication skills. As this is a big and long-term project, I would like to stay organized and maintain my balance between this project and other assignments/tasks from school. I believe that this project will keep me learning from being organized and how to stay on tasks. In terms of developing my communication skills, I would be interested to show my strength in writing emails to contact other schools, communicating with my team and supervisor, as well as our head of school. This will solidly develop my communication skills; simultaneously it allows me to become more open-minded in terms of sharing ideas, meeting new people, and facing some challenges.
Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
  2. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
  3. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
  4. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Meeting with Leaders & Supervisor
At lunchtime, I had my second meeting with three other leaders and our supervisor. Tara and I presented our action plan and received feedback on how we could alter several actions that will be taken. Mrs. Wood suggested modifying some of the dates because we noticed that the dates were too close together and seemed too rushed. Receiving some feedback from our supervisor, Mrs. Wood, we have adjusted the final competition date to April 3rd, 2021, so that we could have time to prepare for the overall competition. The meeting ended shortly, but I was able to understand that our planning stage was coherent and well-structured, which was a part of strengthening our communication skills.

However, I learned that we need to be more effective in terms of time management. This is in regards to our scheduled date for creating a timeline for the overall competition. We were supposed to submit our planning document by the 21st of November, but we could not complete it on time due to our mock exams. Thus, what I learned from this was that I should not procrastinate with meeting the completion date.

Plans for hosting the competition in May 2021
Throughout BMC, I have been the communicator, arranging the meetings, and I took several roles in the marketing team. However, there were some challenges that we faced before we finalized our decision on hosting the competition in May 2021. For instance, due to the unexpected pandemic situation, it was not easy for us to decide a specific date for the BMC competition and move forward with the plan. Since we could not meet at school physically, it was difficult for us to communicate with each other, therefore, the BMC team  had some disputes throughout the planning process. However, we overcame this inconvenience by participating in discussions, presenting our ideas, and taking responsibility in our own roles.

From all these experiences, I was able to commit more to this long-term project and I believe that I learned to communicate more effectively with the Head of School, supervisor, and our team. I have been emailing Mr. Wyncoll to receive final confirmations and inform him about our future plans. Recently, we have decided to host the BMC on May 29th, 2020.

University Counseling
I met with G11s and parents yesterday about how we support students with choosing a career path and selecting a university. The internet stopped working, so I created a 30-minute video summary explaining what I shared. Please watch the video, so you have an understanding of how to help us support your teenager through the process of leaving BIS feeling good about the next step.
