At preschool, we’ve begun exploring chemical changes as we investigate materials and their properties. We asked the question, ‘What happens when we combine materials?’ We found that sometimes we get a reaction. The children prepared for a reaction by wearing goggles to stay safe. We explored what happens when we combine baking soda and vinegar. We also discovered that heat can cause a reaction and change the liquid to a solid. We started to understand the words; liquid and solid.
When we placed detergent into milk, we got a reaction.
“Because you drop colour in the milk and it runs away from the soap because the colour doesn’t like the soap.” Annalika
We explored how the properties of materials can change and how materials react with each other. The children explored how water and oil do not mix and they were able to explain their thinking. ‘The oil always wants to be on top. It doesn’t like the water and wants to go away. ‘ Alannah
The children explored detergent and water and how by blowing we can make bubbles. They used first-hand experiences to find out as well as watched a slow-motion video of bubbles forming and popping. Some children tested the idea of having soap on your hand will stop the bubble from popping.
The children also explored how heat and cold can cause reactions. We explored the question, ‘Can water become a solid?’ The children found out that water can become a solid by putting it in the freezer (cold) but can become a liquid again by heating it in the sun. They also explored that by spraying water on it causes it to melt faster.
The children have been showing attributes of a thinker by asking some interesting questions and using their prior and growing knowledge to make predictions and develop conclusions. They have a great curiosity which we translate to learning.
