Update from the BIS School Board

Dear BIS Community,

As we are well into our first term of the new year, I would like to welcome you to our community and provide an update from the Board of Directors.

As a refresher for returning families and as a brief backdrop for new families, below is a brief description of the governance structure of our institution.

Board Structure
In accordance with Indonesian law, Bali Island School sits under a foundation, the name of our foundation holds the original name of “Bali International School Foundation” (or “Yayasan Bali International School”). The foundation consists of three tiers, the Board of Governors, the Board of Directors, and the Board of Supervisors, also as per Indonesian law.

The running of the foundation is the role of the Board of Directors (BoD). The BoD is in charge of hiring and supporting the Head of School, acts as a fiduciary over the foundation and thus the school, and ensures proper mechanisms are in place that will support the running of the school. The work of the Board is strategic in nature.

As per Indonesian law, at a minimum, the BoD members must consist of a chairman, a treasurer and a secretary. BoD members in our foundation are appointed for a term of five years by the Board of Advisors. The Board of Directors work closely with the Head of School and only through the Head for all matters dealing with the school. Conversely, any issue that is raised within the school will go through the Head of School who assesses whether the matter is operational or strategic in nature before it may be brought to the Board.

The Board of Advisors monitor the work of the Board of Directors and set the overall direction of the foundation. They have the authority to appoint or remove any member of the BoD and the Board of Supervisors. Their positions are for life or until they request to step down.

The Supervisory Board acts as an internal auditor to monitor the work of the BoD and the entities held under the foundation.

Members of the BOD and the Supervisory Board are appointed for 5 year terms by the Board of Advisors and may be reappointed.

A presentation on our governance will be held later in the year where we will provide more detailed information.

Head Of School Search
On July 23rd we announced that we would initiate the search for a Head of School who would start in July 2022. A search committee was formed with members representing our parents, staff, and faculty who are working alongside board members. Ms. Deidre Fischer, a former BIS head of school, who is now an education consultant, is providing assistance as someone who is not only familiar with our school (and many of our staff), the requirements of the position, and the search process itself.

We have placed an advertisement with a leading search agency within the education industry and are currently receiving and filtering applications to create our long-listed candidates. Our advertisement will run until 17th September. We are seeing a strong interest in the position with a diverse applicant pool and applicants with impressive experiences and expertise. We will start conducting our initial interviews and narrowing down the list to come up with our short-listed candidates in the coming weeks.

We will be inviting members from our community to join in interviewing the short-listed candidates in mid-October. We know all candidates will be eager for the opportunity to meet with members of the community to gain a better understanding of the school to which they are applying and we will be appreciative of your support when that time comes.

Topic Group
We will be sending out an invitation to join our Governance Topic Group shortly. Keep an eye out for this announcement and how to apply if you have an interest in governance and believe you can contribute your time and energy to this important task.

Regards,

Kib Roby
Chairman
