Preschool Journey Unit

This term, Preschool students are learning about journeys we take and how it leads people to understand more about the world. We began this unit by talking about the students’ holiday experiences. We tried to sort the experiences into a journey and not a journey. We brainstormed some ideas on what a journey can be. We agreed as a class that a journey is moving from one place to another. The journey can be as far as going to different countries or it can be as close as moving from our class to the library. People have different purposes for the journeys that they make, such as; to learn something new, to meet families/friends, to visit a new place, and many other purposes.

We went on some virtual journeys like going to Yellowstone National Park, Hershey Chocolate Factory, Mount Fuji (hiking), and to Monkey Forest Ubud. We were talking about what we could see on the journeys, the things they could do, and their perspectives on the journeys. Some of our students said that they like the journey as they could see so many things or it is a new experience for them, some others said they disliked it as it is so scary or they don’t want to get dirty while some others said they are not sure as they don’t know what might happen. The students are learning that it is okay to have different perspectives on where to go, what to do or if someone likes the journey or not. Students learned that it is also important to have a reason to explain our thinking.

Our journey unit will be continued by talking about the choices and decisions people make when preparing for a journey. The students will be invited on a journey to different destinations and will be asked to pack their bags with whatever they need. They need to make a list and explain their thinking. They will be responsible for whatever they need to prepare and do on the journey. Buckle up Preschool, we are going to go on so many journeys this term!
