Congratulations to Seo-Yeon Bang (G7), Se Bin An (G8), and Simin Kim (G11)!! Read below to find out why we are proud of our science students.

Seo-Yeon and Se Bin entered into the Dyatmika Science Fair that was held virtually last Saturday, February 5. They won 3rd prize among their competitors. The theme for the Science Fair was: “Investigating solutions to local community problems in the transition to a better world’”.

An excerpt from their experiment report is below:

‘’’

Investigation Title: The Effect of Amount of Shampoo Used on Cleaning Dirt
RQ: How does the amount of shampoo affect how much light (lux) is being reflected off a cloth? 

Introduction: 

Our experiment will examine the average of how much light reflects off different white cloths when washed with different amounts of shampoo with equal amounts of dirt rubbed on. We chose shampoo because our idea was to find out if using more shampoo would clean our hair more. Instead of using real hair, we substituted it as a white cloth. If more light is reflected off the cloth, it is cleaner because the color white reflects all light so it has a higher degree of reflectivity. However, if the white cloth has dirt on it, the reflectivity will be less because the dirt absorbs light. Thus, the cleaner the cloth is, the higher the reflectivity depending on the mass of shampoo. The shampoo contains a chemical called a surfactant which removes debris from our hair. Its molecule has a head that is non-polar and a tail group that is polar so it helps the dirt and the water to mix together even though they are nonpolar and polar.

Project aim: 

Our aim is to find out if there is a difference in the mass of shampoo used on cleaning dirt on a cloth. Typically, shampoo is not good for our environment as it contains chemicals. So by doing this experiment we would like to find out if the mass of shampoo used makes a significant difference in cleaning dirt. We would like to support the environment in the local community by reducing the mass of shampoo usage.

Simin Kim participated in the British Physics Olympiad competition. Simin received a Gold award with his submission and scored higher than the top 18% of the approximately 5000 students that take part in the competition worldwide! What a remarkable achievement Simin! Congratulations! Below is an example of a question from the competition from previous years  that students attempt. Do any of you want to attempt to answer it?! 🙂

The Arts
In the final week of semester 1, students from grades 6 – 9 presented their creative works in Drama, Visual Art, and Music. 

All students involved demonstrated great courage in their performances and exhibits, and below are photos and videos from these sharing events. We hope that over the coming months there will be more face-to-face Art Sharing opportunities for our students and families to attend.

BIS Stage Spotlight Original Performances by Drama 8-9
The culmination of Drama 8-9 students’ work in the “Devising Original Theatre” unit was the presentation of original performances: 

“ALONE”, in which students explored the fear of being alone, by Malena, Zaria, Aron, Ayden, Rachel and Maia.

“The RISE”, in which students explored personal transformation and internal struggles during one’s rise to power, by Nour, Kristopher, Emma, Nina and Manu.

The highlight of the semester journey has been the creation of an original devised group performance. Students had to negotiate a unique starting point that would guide and inspire the process of their creation. Creative confidence has been unleashed as students devised an original play for a particular target audience with specific characters.  Students reflected on their creative thinking, risk-taking, and effective participation in the creative and collaborative development process by evaluating initial responses, final artistic intentions, and audience impact. 

This experience has also given students an opportunity to develop into bold and creative theatre makers and artists – incorporating performance and production elements such as lighting, set design, costumes, props. Students built sets that were atmospheric and powerful and used music and other tech elements to amplify their stories and characters. 

Lots of work and creative energy went into creating and presenting these vivid and impactful performances in a real theatrical setting with a live audience – kudos to Malena, Zaria, Aron, Ayden, Rachel, Maia and Nour, Kristopher, Emma, Nina, Manu! 

 

Service as Action
This week’s Service as Action feature group is ‘Taman Bacaan’. Below is a paragraph written by group leaders Josiah Wong and Caspia Nadapdap relating to the goals and activities provided by Taman Bacaan.

Taman Bacaan began in Term 1 as BIS students planned lessons that would help SD 8 Sanur students (aged 11-12) in learning how to read, write and communicate in English. In Term 2, we were fortunate in having the opportunity to deliver in-person lessons, as we were able to teach the students how to introduce themselves, say their hobbies, activities, plurals and more. Being able to meet the students every Tuesday after school was a huge benefit, as it allowed for all group members to practice the “service” component of this activity. During our latest lesson, we received feedback from the students stating that they would like to improve on their speaking abilities, especially their pronunciation, which will be our main focus for the coming lessons in Semester 2.

We hope that if the situation allows, we can come back to school to teach these students, however, in the meantime, we are planning more fun lessons ahead!
