BAWA Session in Grade 3 Indonesian Studies Class

On Monday April 18, Grade 3 students had a chance to meet Ibu Cynthia, a representative of BAWA (Bali Animal Welfare Association). Taking place in their classroom, the session was done for about 40 minutes which consists of a presentation, class discussion, and worksheet activity.

Grade 3 students learned that there are some programs of BAWA to help animals such as adoption and foster programs, ambulance service and 24/7 hotline service, rehabilitating dogs, and street feeding. Now they know  how to contact BAWA’s ambulance when they see a dog is in an emergency state. They learned which food is appropriate for dogs and which is not. They saw some documentation of the BAWA team taking action to rescue animals.

Students were also introduced to animal welfare and the health, and wellbeing of animals. Some questions lead to interactive discussion and they gain knowledge about animals’ physical and mental states. (Ibu Ina)

Inquiry into the Measurement of Time and Cycles
In Kindy and Grade 1

Take a look at your clock. What time is it? A simple action that we do throughout the day dictates what we do and when we do it. But, when was the last time you thought about the meaning of the time on your clock or the days on your calendar and where did these measurements of time come from?

Over the past month, students in the Kindergarten and Grade 1 class have been looking at how the earth’s natural cycles affect their daily lives. Anywhere from how we tell time, to the holidays we celebrate and the clothes we wear.

Kindy/Grade 1 students have been busy looking at the Earth’s daily rotation. The students observed that each day the Sun cast the same shadow in the same part of the sky at the same time. Using this knowledge, they tracked the movement of the shadows and created their very own class and individual sundial, accurate to telling time which matched our analog clock.

They continued their exploration of the Earth’s cycles with the nightly observations of the moon and what appears to be its changing shape. The conclusion from one of the students: “it doesn’t change shape, it is the shadow of the Earth that gets in the way.”

Grade 5 PYPx 2022
Over the last eight weeks, Grade 5 have been on a journey. They have identified passions and tied them to the Sustainable Development Goals. Together they have

  • prepared food for those in need
  • organized badminton tournaments to make our students more active
  • worked to teach English to local children
  • Worked with the primary students to create awareness about gender stereotypes
  • Hosted lights off movement on Earth Day to reduce our carbon footprint
  • Identified and avoided products with palm oil which is linked to deforestation
  • Organized a beach clean up to remove plastic from our beach in Sanur

Over the last two days, Grade 5 students have had the opportunity to share the process of their journey. They have chosen a passion, based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, narrowed their focus using research questions and reflected on how they have collaborated, and developed their international mindedness and approaches to learning. Grade 5, the whole BIS community are so very proud of you!

Here are a few photos from the last two days
