Secondary eNews – Sept 30th, 2022

Individuals & Societies Department
Grade 6:
In Grade 6 I&S lessons, students have been carrying out research into the culture of various countries around the world. They discovered lots of interesting facts, found some great images and listened to many different languages and types of music. Students presented their findings to their peers and had a lot of fun!

Grade 7:
Our MYP students in Grade 7 were geographers for the month. After watching a disturbing news clip about how people don’t know their geography anymore, they designed posters to make it easy for people to learn about the world.

For their current unit we will explore the wonders of archaeology, with students conducting their own archaeological dig by burying artefacts in their garden.

Grade 8:

Grade 8 I&S students have been learning about natural hazards and their impact on both humans and the natural environment. They began by researching how natural hazards form and then applying that knowledge to global case studies so that they may better understand the impact these hazards have on humans.

They then worked in groups to apply their research and case studies to Bali. This information was shared in the form of a presentation which informed the class about what hazards exist in Bali and what measures can and have been taken to mitigate them.

Their presentations included an interactive component in which students were able to apply what they learned in a fun and engaging way. Students will apply the formative feedback gained in this task to their upcoming summative task where the entire presentation will become interactive.

Grade 9 I&S
These first weeks of the year, grade 9 students have worked on the topic Industrial Revolution in Britain. Key concepts as cause, consequence and change have been the focus of this first unit. In class students worked on a variety of tasks helping them develop their skills such as selecting sources, writing PEEL paragraphs and organising causations in different categories. Students completed presentations recently and gave each other feedback on both presentation techniques as well as content.

Grade 10A I&S

Grade 10 students have started the year with a great focus on the causation(s) of World War One.

Students developed skills by a variety of tasks including the drawing of a storyboard and a class debate. Using evidence to support conclusions, deciding which causation might have been more important than others.

Listening and responding to others as well as structured writing are all skills students have further developed on.

Grade 11 Economics:
In Grade 11 DP Economics, the students had fun playing a simulation in which they had to design, and build, a bridge in competing teams with limited resources in order to highlight the economic problem, scarcity and opportunity cost.

Grade 11 History
Grade 11 history students started this year with Paper 1, Road to Global War – Japanese Expansionism in East Asia.

This first unit of the DP course has encouraged students to further develop their source analysis skills. In class students worked on a variety of tasks to develop their understanding. One way to organise notes and make thinking visible is to work on a ‘living graph’. Students will continue this term with their next unit focussing on Italian and German expansionism, helping them to see links between different parts of the world.

Grade 12 History
Students in grade 12 history have worked very hard to complete the content heavy unit on Mao’s China. As this unit links with papers 1, 2 and 3, there was a significant amount of content that needed to be covered. Students developed their skill further by practising essay writing but also by creating infographics as well as presenting.

DP Updates:
Grade 12 students handed in their final Maths IA today. In addition, students received written feedback on their first official Extended Essay submission and will continue to make improvements until the final due date on October 27. The EE celebrations event will take place on the 3rd of November, one week after the final submission. Grade 12 parents, please make sure to join us on that day to celebrate another milestone achievement in your child’s DP journey.

Theory of Knowledge – TOK Tober

Theory of Knowledge is one of the three CORE subjects in the IB DP program. Although taught as separate subject, it is widely linked with all other subjects students follow. Aims of the subject is to challenge students to become critical thinkers beyond the subjects. Asking questions related to how we generate knowledge and why we believe certain things ar part of the focus of this course.

To develop students thinking skills, this October it is TOK-Tober again.

During The three weeks of school in October grade 9 till 12 students will be exposed to a variety of Theory of Knowledge related activities.

Activities scheduled for this year are;

  • A guest speaker for grade 11 & 12
  • Arts competition for grade 9 till 12
  • TOK BInggo
  • Various activities in the subjects as well as during ATL classes and DP hour.
