Grade 5 PYPx 2022 – Save the Date

In Grade 5, students are coming to the end of their Exhibition process: an extended collaborative inquiry providing “an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile that have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP.”  (IB 2007)

Students have used the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to support their inquiry. They have chosen key areas including:

  • Zero Hunger
  • Gender Equality
  • Climate Action
  • Life Below Water 
  • Life on Land
  • Clean Energy
  • Climate Action
  • Quality Education


Currently, students are working on Making Conclusions and Taking Action. In this phase, students will be

  • Reflecting on new learning under knowledge, understanding, and skills
  • Identifying personal growth under the learner profile and approaches to learning
  • Preparing to share learning with the BIS community

The Grade 5 class will share their PYP Exhibition with their parents next Thursday and Friday the 28th and 29th of April. The BIS Community is invited to join us at 1:30 pm on Friday 29th April. We would love you to celebrate with us!

 

PeriPlus Book Fair in the Library Thursday, April 28th 

Thursday will be a busy day for Primary BIS; in addition to the PYP Exhibition, local book store PeriPlus will set up shop in the library all day to bring some of their store offerings to campus. Books will be available for purchase (PeriPlus will also give the library some vouchers to give away to students to use at the event as well). Students are invited to check out the Fair during their breaks or lunch or after school on Thursday and parents are welcome to come as well. The fair will run all day, from approximately 8 am to 4 pm. PeriPlus will accept cash and credit/debit cards and a portion of the sales will be kicked back to BIS to use to purchase materials for the library. 

PeriPlus has been our major book supplier for 4 years and are also our partner sponsor in our Services As Action “People’s Perpustakaan” free mini lending library (they have donated books to the project). The library would not be able to achieve the high quality of our catalog with them, so come support and also get some books for your child and yourself. 

 

Everyday Exploring New Things in Preschool

We always have a busy fun day at preschool! Our Unit of Inquiry this term is How the World Works with the Central Idea of People learn about how the world works through observation and inquiry. To start the Unit, Preschool students were introduced to many different kinds of materials and science tools that guide them to be more curious about how things work and find out the answer.

We always have something different to be explored every day in our classroom and outside the classroom. We are a thinker as we need to think about the new things that need to be explored and also an inquirer on wondering about something around us.

Scientists always do an experiment. In the experiment, we need to do observations which will include some questions. Preschool students are learning to make questions. We were sitting together and chose an object to explore. Surprisingly, there were lots of things that makes us curious and we came up with some questions!

And our big questions during this week is what is a Scientist and what do they do? We are so lucky to have a chance to visit the Scientist teacher in the Secondary Lab and did some experiments and see some changes that happened during the experiments.

Next week will be our turn to be a scientist by doing our first experiment together in our classroom!

 

Music – Grade 2 Creating through Symbols and Colors

Drawing is excellent to teach basic music symbols and notes. Students can practice identifying music notes, rests, symbols, and parts of the music staff. Grade 2 students have been learning the value of certain basic music symbols (quarter note, eighth note, and rest). They are able to show their understanding of beat, rhythm, and rest by clapping, singing, and playing percussion. They use specific colors to create melody, by coloring the rhythm. The color interprets tune or pitch on musical instruments.
