Morning Drop-Offs
Teachers are on playground duty to supervise students from 7:30 am. Students should put their bags in their cubbies and lunches in the fridge before either going to their classroom if their teacher is there to welcome them, or to the playground. The teacher on playground duty will blow a whistle and send the students to class at about 7:43 am so that they are at their classrooms ready to learn by 7:45 am.
Campus Improvements
Our maintenance team worked very hard to improve our campus during the June & July Holidays, further work continues during the school term. In recent weeks we have improved the signage at the Primary Student Toilets, added steps for the students to help them reach the urinals and washbasins, improved the Signage at the Staff & Visitors Adult Toilets by the library and put new covers on our snack and lunch tables in the primary playground. After receiving feedback from students last year through an activity completed with Ibu Rachael, our School Counsellor, we have adjusted our teacher playground supervision roster so that our children will feel safer and are more carefully supervised during break times. While these changes may appear small, they all play an important part in ensuring our students feel safe and secure while at school.
Supporting Your Child’s Reading Development
(The child absorbs sounds, words, and pictures, pretends to read and retell in his/ her own words) 
- Sit your child on your lap, or snuggle together in bed with a book
- Extend the story, talk about the pictures
- Point out letters and words
- Make connections to personal experiences
- Make predictions during the story
- Share the same books over and over
- Tell your own oral stories to your child
(The child is beginning to decode print and make meaning of what he/she is reading) 
- Read the books your child brings home together
- Encourage your child to use strategies to predict words- pictures, beginning letters, text patterns
- Talk with your child about the meaning of unfamiliar words
- Talk with your child about the message of the story
(The child is building fluency, decoding with greater speed and re-reading to ensure comprehension) 
- Your child likes to read books in a series as a comprehension strategy
- Encourage your child to change strategies if something doesn’t make sense
- Your child is reading with greater speed
- Your child may need your support understanding more complex texts
The Fluent Reader
(The reader is confident in their understanding of a variety of texts and independently utilizes a variety of decoding strategies and self-monitors comprehension) 
- Your child reads for academic purposes as well as for enjoyment
- Your child reads and retains longer texts with more complex vocabulary
- Your child is building up a collection of knowledge
- Your child enjoys exploring a variety of genres
- Fantasy holds a greater appeal as your child jumps into a world of make-believe of heroes and heroines
We will be running a parent workshop on from 8:00 – 8:45 am on Monday 23rd September on Helping your child with reading & writing at home.
BYOD in Grade 5
Grade 5 was excited to set up their iPads a few weeks back! To kick off using our devices we explored the different features on Google Docs such as changing the font, inserting an image and alignment of text. The students then published their edited draft of Hopes and Dreams and inserted images to illustrate their writing. They were able to share They were able to share their document with Ibu Alison online, creating a collaborative document where feedback can be given.
BYOD In Grade 4
Grade 4 demonstrated problem-solving skills, confidence, and community as they participated in a short activity to introduce them to the SeeSaw platform. Using our individual devices, students were able to familiarise themselves with the Grade 4 homepage: journal, activities, posts and responses. Following a guided whole class “walk around”, students were given some independent time to practice these new skills. They responded to a multimedia Introduce Yourself prompt (a visual example, written steps and a recorded explanation) students were able to explore using the different multimedia and creative tools to design unique self-portraits as their first Learning Journey post. We are super excited and enthused by our first mini lesson.
BYOD In Grade 3
Grade 3 students had an amazing opportunity to combine Writer’s Workshop, emotional well-being, Maths and technology into one fabulous project! As part of getting to know each other, we brainstormed our own ideas about things we love – this was the ‘prewriting’ phase of the writing process, recorded on a ‘bubble sheet’. We then used Google Forms to list the options so we could make a digital record. The students logged into their school Gmail on their devices and opened the link to fill in the online form. It was so much fun to see all the things we love being modeled in different ways!
BSSA Soccer
This week, we were welcomed with the home game advantage yet again and played both the 9-10 boys and 11-12 boys games on the north field. The first game to take to the field was the 9-10 boys A team who are coached by Anton. 
The game was a thriller with goals being scored back-and-forth by both teams until the final siren. The end result was SIS 6, BIS 5. Special note goes to Keelmorris and Cosimo for the efforts, well done boys!
In the second game, we had the boys 9-10 B team battling it out with SIS. A hard fought game that resulted in a 2-0 win to SIS. Special note goes to James Woods and Ronan Erickson who kept the team strong with only 6 players. Well done!
The third and final match was between the BIS A team in the 11-12 year old division, who were against an in-form Dyatmika. This team has been supported by two talented student coaches, Mir and Pablo. The final result went the way of Dyatmika’s A team who scored 4, while BIS just managing the 1 goal.
Our 9 – 10 Girls played two games at Dyatmika this week 
with them getting a 3 – 0 win over Canggu Community School. Our goal scorers were Sienna (2) and Ella (1) scoring her first goal for our team. We lost our second game 0 – 3 to Dyatmika. It is great to see the players supporting each other and trying their best until full time.
A reminder for next week, that on Wednesday the 11th of September, we have:
9-10 and 11-12 girls playing@BIS (games finish@4: 30 pm)
9-10, 11-12 &13-15 boys and girls all playing@Dyatmika (games finish@4: 00 pm)
Mini Football will be played@Dyatmika from 3:00-4: 00 pm
Keep up the great sportsmanship, great to see everyone high-fiving or shaking a hand at the conclusion of the game, regardless of the result.
BIS Whole School Photo
The primary student individual photo will be taken in BIS Library on Tuesday, 17th September 2019, please ensure that your child/ren are wearing a clean & tidy white uniform for this session. Another class group photo session will be taken on Thursday, 30th January 2020 with Batik uniform.
We will send the school photo order form to the parents by next week, if you are interested to order it, please submit the form with money in the envelope and give it directly to the photographer team in Library on the photoshoot days or give it to your child/ren or teacher, so that we can give it to them. This year, our new photographer is from “Only Mono”, please click here for more information about the photographer. If you want to see the sample & quality of the photo frames for this year, please see them in the receptionist with Ibu Indira.
