Week 3-Celebrating who we are, where we have come from and looking ahead

This past week we had the opportunity to host our Back to School Night. It was great to see so many parents in attendance. It is an important relationship, where parents and teachers are working together in order to help our students achieve to their utmost potential. I have included the opening presentation from last evening. If you have any questions about upcoming events please feel free to contact the Secondary School office.

BIS International Day

On September 4th BIS will celebrate International Day. This is a great way for us to come together as a community to celebrate the different parts that make us unique, while honoring the international mindedness that we hold dear here at BIS.

We encourage all students, parents and staff to come to school in clothes that are specific to their culture. It is also possible to change midday if this is more suitable/comfortable. Because all staff are invited to join the celebration, the school will close and lock all offices and close off one side of the campus during the event. We will have a normal school day until lunch, which will need to be slightly earlier. Once students have eaten their lunch and changed, they will need to congregate in the primary courtyard where we will assemble the International Parade at about 12:15. Parents are invited to join their country groups for the parade. Please note that Preschool will march at the front of the parade under the United Nations banner, followed by Indonesia as the host country.

12:30 – The International Parade will begin the march, possibly accompanied by our marching band.

12:50 – Denise Walsh will address the whole community.

13:00 – All students will be dismissed so that they can visit the International Stalls that have been prepared by parents.

14:30 – All students will return to homerooms so that we can dismiss as usual.

14:45 – Secondary students and families with primary aged students may return to the International Day celebration if they wish until it officially finishes at 15:30.

BSSA Competitions

This past week saw our first BSSA competition of the year. It was great to see so many of our students participating and being active. This week some students will be traveling off campus to compete. All students will go to the games via a bus from the BIS parking lot. Students will accompany their coaches who will be taking attendance as the players get on the bus. All students will return back to BIS after the game via the bus unless the student’s parent has informed the coach beforehand and some to see the coach at the event. If a student states that their parent is coming to the game but is not there by the time the bus is scheduled to depart that student will ride back to BIS on the bus with the coach and the rest of the team and will need to picked up from school

Thank you for your continued support of the BIS program, if you have any questions or concerns please contact the secondary school office or our Student Life Coordinator, Mr. Sutherland.

SS Incomplete Homework Procedure

A reminder that it is our belief that all students are required to do all of the assignments and projects that are assigned to them.  As an outcome based school, we cannot evaluate a student on their learning if the work has not been submitted.  Additionally, we want to impress upon our students the importance of growth within the work that is assigned.  Our teachers need to see where a student is in order to help get to where they can go.   To that end, we have established a procedure, in consultation with the students, the faculty, and from the basis of best practice to try and give students every opportunity possible to show what they have learned and improve upon that learning.

All students that do not submit work will be referred to the secondary office the following day after school for one hour or until the work is done. Myself or a designated teacher will supervise the room for the first quarter.  Students will continue to come in after school every day until their assignment is complete. If the assignment is not passed into the teacher within three days, parents will receive an email from the Secondary School Office. Students who are regularly referred for not meeting their academic responsibilities will be required to meet with school administration and will include a meeting with parents as this is a requirement of all students that attend our school.

Long Weekend

This coming Friday will be a holiday for Eid ul Adha. school will resume on Monday, September 4th.

Enjoy the break! Thank you for your continued interest and support of BIS and our students.

Kind Regards,

Justin Walsh
