Week 9-Focus on Learning

As we come to the end of the term our students are putting a great deal of effort into their culminating activities.  This is a time of the year when we are able to really get a good look at where our students are, what they still need to do and how we can help them. Please take some time this weekend to ask your student what things they have coming up in school.  I think you will be surprised at all they are doing and I know that they will appreciate the support and encouragement.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences are a perfect opportunity to work as a team towards the educational growth of our students.  The more that we are able to share information, provide feedback and support the better able we are to help our students reach their potential.

We will be having Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, September 28th from 1pm-6pm in the Multi Purpose Room.  Students will be dismissed from school at 12:30 on that day and any Secondary ASA will not be able to run as our teachers will be meeting with you, the parents.  Please make sure that your student has been picked up from school as there will be no way to supervise the students and our library will be used for the Primary Parent/Teacher Conferences.  Students are welcomed to come to their conferences, but they must arrive with their parent.  To help facilitate our sign-up process, parents have been given the ability to electronically set-up a conference time instead of having to come in, line up, and see if a teacher will be available to meet.   We ask that parents and students prioritize the teachers they would like to meet with, as schedules will fill very quickly.  This information and electronic link has been sent, please inform the Secondary office if you have not received the link.

The conferences will be run in 7 minute time slots, allowing for parents to see as many of their teachers as possible.  If the need arises for a longer conference please stop by the Secondary Principals table to schedule a follow up meeting.

We look forward to working together to help our students continue their growth and work towards their potential.  Thank you again for taking the time to work in partnership with us.

Extension offerings here at BIS

We are very fortunate to have many different ways for our students to look for support and challenge themselves.  Currently we are hosting Bali MUN, where students interact with other schools in diplomacy, tackling real world unilateral problems.  Bali MUN is also a club that continues throughout the year that offers students the chance to work on their critical thinking and presentation skills.

Our math teachers offer SEAMC, which is a non profit math competition that allows students to challenge themselves in the field of math.  Our math department also runs different after-school sessions with different members of the department each day of the week, except Tuesday.

Our Approaches to Learning or ATL club, runs every Thursday with students looking at ways to maximize their study time and organizational skills. Our science department also runs after school sessions with their students as well as the Green Team, which is an environmental group focused on environmental systems and how they operate.

We are very fortunate to have so many different type of learning opportunities for our students.  Please continue to ask your students about the multitude of way that they can challenge and extend themselves here at BIS.

University Fair

On Tuesday, October 4th we will be hosting a large college fair.  Universities from all over the world will be on our campus to answer questions and also provide workshops regarding admissions processes and course selections.  This is a tremendous opportunity for our students and parents.

BSSA Soccer here at BIS

I was fortunate enough to watch some very high quality soccer games Wednesday afternoon.  It was so nice to see so many of our secondary students actively engaged, running around and having a great time.  It was also really nice to see some of our older students take on some leadership roles through coaching.  It was really impressive to see how far some of the younger students have come and the overall level of sportsmanship that our students exhibited.

Great Job!

EOTC Assembly

Today we were able to celebrate all of the fantastic learning and connections that went on during our EOTC week.  The students presented slideshows of their most memorable components from their camps and their teacher leaders celebrated the development of the attributes of the Learner Profile.  One of the great things about these trips is how they reinforce these Learner Profile skills and what they mean both inside and outside of a class room.  In the coming weeks during our MYP hour the individual student groups will be presenting about their trips, highlighting the skills they took away from them as well as some of the ongoing community outreach programs that have developed as a result of our EOTC week.

What a fantastic opportunity for our students.
