How English Language Learners are supported at BIS ‘English as an Additional Language Program’

Currently, some of our Grade 9 English Language Learners are studying the graphic novel, ‘When the wind blows’ by Raymond Briggs.

This fits with their current Unit ‘Language and Literature is invariably affected by the context in which they were created’.

In what ways did the Cold War impact people’s use of language? (factual)

How? (conceptual)

A graphic novel is a format similar to comic books as they use sequential art to tell a story.  As they are conveyed visually, a graphic novel increases reading comprehension & vocabulary, which in turn, provides scaffolding for the developing reader. Presenting complex material in a readable text allows students to understand the Cold War context and how it impacted the use of language.

Animations

Watching animated movies is a great way to learn vocabulary in context; English subtitles can also be added to improve comprehension.  After reading the graphic novel, students have been able to consolidate their learning by watching the animated version by Jimmy Murakami.
