FRIDAY NEWSLETTER from Secondary – 17th Feb 2017

Week 25-Continued Development

This past week we have had our Personal Projects completed, ISA testing, Drama performances and assessments and IAs turned in for our DP students.  We also had a thorough presentation about our DP program for our rising 10th grade parents.  This is a time of the year when things are moving fast, while we also try to look ahead.  We were fortunate enough to have some Mindfullness training for our students this past week as well to help them deal with some of the stress and pressures of school.  Please ask your student about it when you get a chance.

ISA Testing

We have just finished our ISA Testing for this year.  We will use this data to inform our instruction for the coming months as well as plan for next year in order to continue to make strides in Literacy, Math and Science skills.  Students will receive individual scores, these will be shared home once we have them.

IISSAC Basketball Tournament

This coming Friday our Men’s and Women’s IISSAC Basketball teams will travel to represent BIS in their end of season tournament.  This weekend is a culmination of a season of hard work and dedication by our students, as well as a great opportunity to make connections from different parts of Indonesia.

BIS Class Photos

On the 20th of February BIS will be having it’s class photos for the 2016-17 school year.  Purchase plans have been sent home to families via email. School Order Form for Photo Frame

IB Diploma Course Selection

This past Monday Mr. Hjelm presented to our 10th grade parents about the IB Diploma here at BIS and the different choices our students can make in creating their Diploma program.  Our students have had meetings with our counselor, their teachers and the IB coordinator regarding all of the different course we offer and what their choices can do as they start to think about university.  On March 10th our DP teachers will present to all of our year ten students about their specific courses and answer any questions in a whole class forum.  Please speak with your student about the choices that they will soon be making.

Second Semester Conferences

Our second semester Parent/Student/Teacher conferences will be held on the 23rd of March.  This will be a non teaching day.  We will have a combination of conference types going on that day.  Our 6-8 graders will be participating in student led conferences, the rest of the secondary will use the same Student/Parent/Teacher format that we followed in the first semester.  It is very important that your student accompanies you for these conferences, this is the best way for us to work together to help them continue to grow and succeed with their learning.  The second semester conferences are also a great time to speak with teachers about next year course selection.  The online signup format that we used last semester will be used again.  This information will be coming out shortly.  Parents with siblings in either the Primary or the Secondary will be given a window to sign up before the rest of our parent community.  Thank you for your continued interest and support or your child’s learning here at BIS.

Personal Project Exhibition

Our 10th grade students will be presenting their Personal Projects on the 23rd of February.  This event highlights all of the hard work and self directed learning that our 10th grade students have gone through this year.  It is a celebration of their learning and experiences.  I want to congratulate them all on such creative and thought provoking ideas.  I also want to thank Ms. Coburn and the individual supervisors for their help and guidance throughout this process.

GIN Conference

This year we have a number of students attending two different Global Issues Network or GIN conferences.  Our students are taking an active role in their communities and expanding that into a global context.  We will have students attending and presenting at both the GIN Conference in South Korea and Hong Kong.  It is fantastic to see our students take their passions and find ways to share them while making a difference both locally and in a global context.  Way to go BIS!

The GIN Students are also hosting a talent show on Friday the 17th to raise money for their proceeds of the poverty component of the GIN Conference.  There will be a great deal of BIS Talent on display!

Bali Beach Cleanup

Many of our students will be involved with One Island One Voice about the the biggest beach clean up Bali has ever seen. In the spirit of both Valentine’s Day (February 14th) and Hair Peduli Sampah (February 21st), we are showing our love for Bali by cleaning up the coastline around the entire island, on Sunday 19th February 2017.

We aim to cover the coast of Bali with thousands of people taking action and showing their love for Bali, and we would love for BIS to be involved with this momentous event.  Please speak with your student about this proactive event.
