Counselor’s Corner – April 3, 2020

Social-Emotional Counseling

Welcome back to school everyone! I hope you were able to rest and relax a bit together as a family during the break, in spite of the challenging times we are facing.

Perhaps this Buddha quote sums up best how we might face this challenge: “May we live like the lotus, at home in muddy water.”

We are back in classes and super busy, working from our many posts around the globe, and the beauty of it all is that we are together! And we will continue to get through this, together.

I know that families are overloaded with resources, so today I’ll just share one that might help us live like the lotus: https://www.mindfulschools.org/free-online-mindfulness-class-for-kids/#episodes

There are also free monthly mindfulness community classes for adults on the first Weds. of each month. Additional grounding resources can be found on the Distance Learning Page on our website.

Supporting One Another

This is a time to support one another and reach out. I urge you to reach out to me or to another mental health professional if you are struggling. Here are some resources for online therapy. If you are in Bali, The Lighthouse Sanur is offering online and in person sessions held outdoors with the recommended distancing protocols in place.

University Counseling

Talk about living like the Lotus! Amidst all this craziness, our Grade 12 students are receiving admissions offers from top universities around the world and we couldn’t be happier for them. Admissions offers have come from the University of Amsterdam, Emory University, University of Michigan, University of Toronto, University of Aberdeen, and University of Melbourne, to name just a few. Congratulations to all our Grade 12s as they continue to receive admissions decisions on a daily basis. We are so proud of you!

For our Grade 11 students just starting the process of selecting universities to apply to next year, I will post here a weekly university to discover. Please also continue to check and scroll through the tabs at the bottom of the regularly-updated Opportunities for Students document for:

  • Upcoming College and University Visits (these will be held virtually while we are closed)
  • Summer programs around the world
  • Internships/ Scholarships
  • Tutoring Resources

University of the Week – Saint Michael’s College, Vermont USA

Hello from Saint Michael’s College!

As we continue adjusting to the realities of life in the land of social distancing, here at St. Mike’s we’ve been working hard to put together new ways to connect with your students. We may not be able to attend college fairs, visit your high school, or invite you to  campus, but we do have an opportunity to try new things – and this kind of innovation, where we can explore freely, is what we do best.

Online Information Sessions

Students can join us online to find out what makes St. Mike’s special – who we are, what we’re passionate about, and how our students thrive here. As an added bonus, they’ll have the chance to video chat with current students immediately following the presentation.

Virtual Tour

Students may not be able to wander through the quad for a few more weeks, but with our virtual tour they can explore all the nooks and crannies that make up the St. Mike’s campus no matter where they are.

Learning Resources

With so many school districts shifting to remote learning, we wanted to do our part in helping provide material for teachers and counselors to use in their lesson plans. With that in mind, we’ve put together a collection of college planning resources and academic content for you to use in whatever manner works best for you and your students.

Thank you for all you do. If there’s any way we  can be of assistance during these times, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
