Primary – Grade 1 Story Elements

Grade 1 have been exploring the elements of a story: characters, setting, plot, theme and conflict. We have been taking a closer look at these story elements to see how a story is constructed and to better understand what we’ve read. Using information from illustrations, we have been developing our understanding of characters, settings and plots. This week, we have been adding conversations to our writing by adding speech and thought bubbles to our illustrations and using speech marks to show characters’ thoughts and feelings in our writing.

During Reader’s Workshop, we have been exploring books by one of our mentors; Mo Willems. The children really enjoy these books because of the real world pictures. We get to highlight speech bubbles in Knuffle Bunny because she is talking nonsense when she is a baby. We get to create the thought bubbles with what we think she is really saying.
