Primary – Indonesian B: Let’s go Shopping
Students from Grade 2 Language B Indonesian have just finished their inquiry into the fact that people trade to get what they need and want. They have been focusing on different types of shops, asking for prices of specific items as well as trying to understand the culture of bargaining in Indonesia.
As part of tuning in, students sketched different types of shops that they usually visit and included the items that are usually sold. They developed vocabulary through classroom activities, such as memory games and board games, and also used an online vocabulary game as a resource. In order to build fluency and confidence, the students used Indonesian to communicate. They worked in pairs to create and perform plays. This fun activity gave the students the opportunity to practice authentic language from everyday life. The teacher modeled much of this dialogue. Then students adapted some of the words to create their own conversations.
Here is an example of the dialogue between Zachary and Timmy in a stationary store.
Timmy (T) = seller Zac (Z) = Buyer
T: Selamat pagi. Selamat datang di toko Bagus.
Z: Selamat pagi
T: Mau beli apa?
Z: Saya mau beli spidol warna jingga dan penghapus. Berapa harganya?
T: Spidol harganya 3.000 rupiah dan penghapus harganya 5.000 rupiah.
Z: Wow! Murah sekali! Saya beli spidol jingga dan kuning.
T: Total harganya 11.000 rupiah.
Z: Ini uang saya
T: Terimakasih
Z: sama – sama.
