Primary eNews – February 15, 2019
Mother Tongue Day
BIS will be celebrating Mother Tongue Day on Monday 18 February. All Preschool to Grade 10 students will meet on the primary playground from 8:00am until about 8:30am to share books with other students who share the same mother tongue. Our middle school students will read to and with our primary students. Parents are welcome to join. All students must wear full school uniform (white shorts with shorts, skirts or skorts) on Monday as the Mother Tongue activity will be recorded. Students who have PE or swimming during the day must bring their PE uniform and change.
Promotional Video Shooting Next Week
The school’s leadership and marketing team and some parents have been working closely with staff from AVB Video for the last couple of months to prepare our Bali Island School promotional video. The initial promotional video will be about 3 minutes long and other shorter videos will be produced throughout the course of the year. AVB staff will be in the school on Monday 18 – Wednesday 20 February for video shooting.
All students whose class is being recorded on Tuesday or Wednesday must wear full school uniform (white shorts with shorts, skirts or skorts). Students who have PE or swimming during the day must bring their PE uniform and change. Teachers of the classes involved will have emailed or included details in their blogs.
School Photos on Wednesday 20 February
All class photos will be taken on Wednesday 20 February. All students must wear full school uniform (white shorts with shorts, skirts or skorts). Students who have PE or swimming during the day must bring their PE uniform and change. Students received Order Forms for Canvas Photo Frames today. Please note that sibling photos will only be taken if the order form has been returned by Tuesday 19 February.
Student Hair
Students with hair past their shoulder will be asked to tie it back or up from next week. The reasons for this request are that the students will look neater, it is safer and will also be healthier as we try to decrease the cases of head lice we have had in the primary school in recent weeks.
Play Based Learning Parent Workshop on Monday, February 25
Bali Island School Preschool teachers will be leading a parent workshop on Play Based Learning in the Early Years from 8:00 – 9:00 am on Monday 25 February in the Library at Bali Island School.
We will discuss the importance of play for young children and what it can look like in the classrooms and playground. We will also have a range of hands on activities for parents to try and then discuss with our teachers.
Parents of Pre School to Grade 1 students from all schools are welcome to join us.

Primary Stu Co Talent Show
Our Primary Student Council (Stu Co) have been working for a number of weeks now to organise the Primary Stu Co Talent Show.
Entry forms will go out next week that the organisers can get an idea of the interest from students wanting to perform. Students may enter individually or in a small group with 2, 3 or 4 other friends. Student can only enter the Talent Show once. Students will be grouped into one of three categories; Kindergarten & Grade 1; Grade 2 & Grade 3; and Grade 4 and Grade 5.
The Stu Co will do some lunch time auditions with teacher support in the coming month with successful students being invited to perform at an upcoming primary assembly. Once this schedule is organised, we’ll invite parents to come along and watch their child perform. The Stu Co are planning for an after school performance for selected acts during the last week of March or first week of April.
The organisation is still fluid so there may be changes, but it is great to see such a positive Action coming from the Stu Co members.
The Primary Stu Co Members are Kristina, Aliya, Tahlia, Aqvila, Zaria, Hannah, Mia, Sophie, Naomi and Alida.
House T-Shirt Orders
If any of new families wish to order the house t-shirts, please drop by Ibu Indira in the main office during the next week. The shirts cost 70,000IDR each. All students are able to wear their house t-shirts to school on a Friday and other special days throughout the year.
Lunch Times in the Primary School
Lunch time is always a great opportunity for students to enjoy spending time with their friends and participating in a number of activities.
- Many of our 9 – 11 year old students participate in BSSA sport training once or twice a week and frequently spend additional lunch times organising their own practice sessions.
- Our Grade 1 and 2 students are able to go over the big field and covered courts on Mondays and Thursdays.
- A number of students enjoy spending time enjoying books in the library while others participate in student led activities such as craft and drawing.
- The usual games of handball, football, cricket and bull rush are also frequently played by our students.
- The students enjoy swinging, climbing, hanging and other games on the playground equipment.
- Our Primary Student Council (Stu Co) have also led some activities for the younger students with support of the teachers, We are planning on continuing to do this once every 4 or 5 weeks.
- Fridays are always a fun lunch time with a range of teacher organised games on the primary pitch, music is playing for the students participating in dancing and skipping games.
It has been great to see more and more activities and games involving students from different grade levels joining in together and developing friendships out of their own class group.
Applause for a Cause
Students and staff from both Primary and Secondary have been very busy rehearsing for the BIS charity fundraising evening! There will be performances of songs by The Beatles, Queen, Adele, from the world of musical theatre and much much more! Tickets are on sale now in front of the library, so make sure to buy them before they sell out!
It will be a fabulous opportunity for our school to come together to share a special evening raising essential funds for the children in Lombok. There will be refreshments in the interval, plus chances to win prizes in our prize draw! If any parents have prizes they are willing to donate please email salborn@baliis.net or chat with Samantha Walther-Jones!
There will be a ‘movie chill out zone’ to supervise students not in ASA’s between 3pm – 5pm. If you would like to register your child to be supervised during this time prior to the performance please email salborn@baliis.net
We hope to see you there!
