Secondary Newsletter No. 37 – May 31, 2019
Dear Parents,
Thank you for the many kind wishes I have received over the past two weeks. I hope to be back on Monday to present at the Step-Up Day session at 8am. Unfortunately my condition requires me to basically not move so I will not be very visible or accessible at school for the last two weeks. I am working every day from home and can respond to any queries/emails promptly.
Thank you to all involved in organising and attending the Grade 12 Graduation. I am really proud of our Grade 12 students and the way they have approached their studies this year. Grade 9-11 students sat their final exams this week and will receive the feedback from their teachers in coming days. These exams are set up as a learning opportunity to better students for success in the Diploma Programme. Our STUCO members will receive two full days of official Peer Mediation Training from Ms. Gerbic on June 10 and 11. A reminder to parents that classes will be running right up until the final day on June 12. Reports will be sent on Tuesday, June 11.
Approximately half of the students in the Secondary School qualified for and participated in the BSSA Athletics held at BIS on Friday. Thank you to all parents who came and supported.

Grade 12 Graduation
Congratulations to our graduating class of 2019. They have shown great dedication, determination and resilience to survive the rigours of the IB Diploma Programme and to graduate with BIS High School Diplomas. They have certainly added to the atmosphere of our small school community and will leave a lot of positives behind, from CAS projects to leadership skills passed on to our younger students. Their legacy will remain even after they have left us.
Congratulations as well to the parents, teachers, friends and family members for the support, time and love they have dedicated to this wonderful class. They leave us safe and confident in the knowledge that they will succeed in wherever the future takes them.
World Scholar’s Cup- Global Round
Our students performed exceptionally well in this year’s Bali Regional World Scholar’s Cup and have been invited to participate in the Global Round in Manila, Philippines (see http://www.scholarscup.org /global-round/manila/) – This Global Round in Manila will be centered at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
This experience will include all the same academic competitions that the Bali Regional Round included, but also scavenger hunts, keynote speeches, panel discussions, our signature Scholar’s Ball. Of course, it will also include all the competitive and community-building events that student’s performed in, from the Debate Showcase to the Scholar’s Bowl. If BIS students perform admirably in this Global Round, many of the top teams will earn invitations to the annual Tournament of Champions at Yale University, where participants will learn, debate, and build new friendships among fellow scholars from all over the world.
This year, WSC Manila Global Round is being held September 6-11, 2019. As this is an overseas trip, costs for participation are significantly more expensive than they have been in the Bali Regional Rounds. The entrance fee of 9,400,000 IDR (or $650 USD) needs to be paid to the front office by June 7th, next Friday, in order to secure your child’s spot. More information concerning flights, accommodations, meals, teacher chaperones, as well as any additional excursions will be forthcoming.
A fantastic cheer for all our student’s hard work and achievements!
– Mrs. Mac

Exams are now over for Grades 9-11!
A well-timed break yesterday allowed the students to take a much needed mid-week rest. Students have studied hard over the last few weeks in preparation for their exams and it’s a relief for many to have them done and dusted. Results are already coming back from teachers who have made marking them a priority.
Now that exams are over, it doesn’t mean it’s about relaxing in class. Our expectations of getting classwork completed still remain the same. There is work to be done over the two remaining weeks. Please ensure that your child continues to come to school and adheres to our expectations.

Smooth Transitions: (for primary and secondary parents)
Is your family moving? Though we are sad to see you go we definitely want your transition to be a smooth one. To help with this, I am meeting with all students departing BIS at the end of this year and giving each of them a RAFT. Each student will meet with me to talk about how they feel about moving and will be given a RAFT booklet. The RAFT concept can be used by the whole family and helps transition to our new home without feelings of regret or unfinished business. The R stands for Reconciliation; is there anyone in your life here you need to apologize to or have a heart to heart with? This is the time for reconciliation. The A stands for Affirmations; are there people here you’d like to thank for helping and supporting you? Now is the time to show them your appreciation. The F stands for Farewell; Are there people, places, pets, or possessions you’ll be saying goodbye to? Now is the time to visit those special people and places one more time and relinquish pets and possessions to new owners with whom you know they’ll be in good hands. The T stands for Think Destination; What are you excited about and looking forward to in your new home? Now is the time to Talk about your new school, your new home, and the new opportunities that will be available to you there. We wish all departing families a smooth transition to your new homes and will continue to hold you in our hearts here at BIS, where you have each left a positive imprint.
